Is the Rockies Record a Fluke?

The Rockies went 1-2 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in their last series. This pushes their record to 12-6, and they went 2-3 in their last five games. This poses a question. Is the Rockies record a fluke, or are they truly the 3rd best team in baseball only 1.5 games back from the leading Cubs?

The Rockies ARE Good

The Colorado Rockies record isn’t a fluke. They are a 12-6 team, and they can make some noise this offseason. There are a couple of reasons why I say they are a complete team and not just getting lucky wins.

  • They have one of the best hitters in baseball right now.
  • Their pitching has gotten much better
  • They have beaten decent teams.

The best hitter in baseball

The Rockies have a really hot bat in their lineup. Charlie Blackmon is hitting .472. He has a chance to have a .400 batting average for the year with it being shortened. With so much success from Blackmon, it is easy to overlook some of his teammates. Nolan Arenado is hitting a .310 BA, with four home runs, and a .344 OBP his last seven games. The other hot bat in the lineup, Trevor Story is also hitting a high .344, with two home runs, and a .382 OBP. This is a fun group to watch and if the pitching stays good, this club will be hard to beat.

The improved pitching

The Rockies have been terrible with their pitching the last couple of seasons. That has not been the case for this year. In overall pitching, the Rockies rank in the top 10, with the 7th best pitching in the league. As a club, they have a combined ERA with a 3.99, 131 strikeouts, gave up 16 home runs, have a 1.21 WHIP, and have converted seven out of eight save opportunities. With Wade Davis on the IL and Scott Oberg possibly done for the season, they need to find someone new to close the door. Other than that, this pitching staff looks promising and it will be exciting to see what they can do.

They have beaten good teams

The Rockies have had some easier opponents, with Seattle, and Texas, but they have also had decent teams. They swept the A’s, 2-0, beat the Padres, 2-1, and went 3-1 against the Giants. The Giants went 3-4 against the Dodgers this season which is promising for the Rockies. The Diamondbacks got the best of them in their series, winning two out of three games. Overall this team has faced some good talent and still is tied, third-best in the MLB standings.

The Rockies have had a really good 18 game start to their season. They will have a test the rest of this month, facing the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Padres again. That will show if this team really is a fluke, or they are actually good enough to win the NL West. As mentioned by @samfosberg and his article, Will The Dodgers Take The NL West Again? Maybe Not. This might be a year for the Rockies.
