Three Days Gone: The Pirates Return To Face Reds

The Pirates return today after a three-day break of what should have been a series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Pittsburgh will be in Cincinnati to play the 8-10 Reds in a four-game set. Before their break, the Bucs were swept for the second time this year, this time by the Detroit Tigers.

The series against the Reds could be a major opportunity for Pittsburgh to gain some much-needed ground. Having three days off should help the team recharge and get their heads right. The Bucs are last in the NL Central with a 3-13 record.

Both Sides Of The Ball

Today’s game one starters are Trevor Williams for the Pirates and Anthony DeSclafani for Cincinnati. Although Williams is 0-3, he’s had some great starts for Pittsburgh.

DeSclafani is becoming one of the great pitchers in MLB, pitching 11 innings this year with a 0.00 ERA. The Bucs really have their work cut out for them today.

When it comes to the offensive side of the ball, both teams are pretty even. Nick Castellanos leads the Reds in home runs with seven, compare that to Colin Moran’s five. Moran went from batting over .300 to just a mere .226, so his productivity has definitely declined.

The Pirates are 1-7 on the road, which is not even close to being good. And Cincinnati has a 4-6 home record, which isn’t .500, but it’s better than 1-7.

Deadly Arms

The Reds have a distinct advantage in this series. Pittsburgh has to face some serious firepower for the entire four-game set. Tomorrow they go up against Sonny Gray, who’s 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA.

Game three on Saturday is no different, when they see Trevor Bauer. Bauer is 2-0 with an outstanding 0.93 ERA. And lastly, Luis Castillo, who is having the worst season out of all the pitchers named, 0-2 and a 3.91 ERA.

The Bucs will need to apply some early pressure if they want to avoid being swept again. With the three-day break, and the recent signing of pitcher, Henderson Alvarez, the Pirates need to win now.
