Breaking: Nate Pearson on the IL today with right elbow tightness. Pearson will go through further testing to determine severity of injury. Manager Charlie Montoyo says Pearson will go through further testing to determine severity of injury. As of now, we do not know how long Pearson will be on the IL.
Pearson’s Performance before IL
Nate Pearson has an up and down first few starts. In his debut, Pearson matched Scherzer pitch for pitch. Going five innings, with five strikeouts, two walks and two hits. Pearson was solid, keeping hitters off-balance with his plus slider and overpowering fastball.
In his next start, Pearson went five innings, giving up three runs on two hits, three walks and five strikeouts. He was solid, however, command became an apparent issue. Pearson’s fastball command began to waver, and he was hanging his slider.
Against the Marlins, Pearson’s command was not there. In 2-1/3 innings, Pearson walked four while only throwing 33 strikes. In addition, he gave up five hits, four runs and only struck out one.
Against the Orioles, Pearson was hurt by the long ball. Anthony Santander hit two off of Pearson, and Chance Sisco hit a two-run blast. Pearson’s velocity was down after a long wait between the top and bottom of the fifth. After the first, Pearson sat 95-99, then in the fifth, sat 93-95 mph. Pearson then was pulled after not getting an out in the fifth.
