For the first time in nine games, the Red Sox are finally victorious. After being swept by the Rays and Yankees, and losing game one of the series to Philadelphia, Boston was finally able to pick up a W in the second game of the series against the Phillies.
Boston was led offensively by Rafael Devers, who had three hits in four at-bats including a home run. Devers also had three RBIs. Mitch Moreland was the only other Red Sox player with multiple hits. Jackie Bradley Jr. drove in three runs for the Sox.
Solid Pitching Leads to Win
Pitching wise, the Red Sox performed pretty well surprisingly. All season the Sox have been struggling to pitch but today it was a whole different story. After getting shelled in his MLB debut, Kyle Hart went nearly four innings, allowing only two hits and striking out five. However, Hart struggled to find the strike zone at some points in his outing allowing four base-on-balls. Austin Brice came in to relieve Hart. He went 1.1 innings allowing zero hits and zero runs. He struck out two and ultimately was awarded the win for Boston. Between Ryan Weber, Matt Barnes, and Brandon Workman, they collectively allowed only one run and one hit through four innings. They struck out five batters (combined).
As for the Phillies, they struggled offensively and only had three hits all game despite their three runs scored. Jake Arrieta was handed the loss allowing four runs on five hits. he walked four batters and struck out three.
The Sox were finally glad to get back into the win column after their nine-game losing streak. Despite some early struggles, Boston hopes to turn around their rough start and finish strong. The Red Sox will take on the Orioles in Baltimore tomorrow for the start of a four-game series.
