The Marlins need a lot of pitching reinforcements with Sandy Alcantara and Caleb Smith still absent. Therefore, according to Jon Heyman, the team has called its No. 1 prospect, Sixto Sanchez, up to the major leagues.

Sanchez spent the last five seasons in the minor-league systems of the Phillies and the Marlins, reaching Double-A. The Dominican was nothing short of sensational, posting a 2.58 ERA across 68 appearances, 59 of which were starts.

He was especially dominant during his latest campaign in Jacksonville and Jupiter, having a 2.76 ERA across career-high 20 starts. This was also the season when he finally reached the 100-strikeout mark. Also, his K/9 figure of 8.1 was the second-best of his young career. The same goes for the 1.7 bases on balls per nine innings during the 2019 campaign.

Sanchez joined the Marlins in February 2019 as a part of the trade which sent catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Phillies in exchange for Jorge Alfaro, Sanchez, Will Steward, and cash. Sanchez was perhaps the most important asset of the deal.

Sixto Sanchez was an invitee to Miami’s spring-training and summer camps. He threw combined 90 pitched spanned across five Marlins scrimmages prior to the start of the 2020 season. The 22-year-old will likely become either the No. 5 starter or join the bullpen amid Alcantara and Smith’s expected return to the starting rotation next week.

Sanchez could become the third member of the Marlins top-10 prospect list to make his MLB debut. Lewin Diaz and Monte Harrison are currently part of Miami’s major-league roster, No. 8 and No. 10, respectively.

The 9-9 Marlins return to action for the series finale at home against the Mets. The game is tonight with a 6:10 start at Marlins Park. Then, they will travel to Washington for five consecutive games against the Nationals from Friday through Monday. This includes a Saturday doubleheader.
