The Blue Jays Should Target Trevor Williams

The Blue Jays should target Trevor Williams. Trevor Williams has an ERA of 3.70 and a WHIP of 1.36. The Blue Jays need starting pitching and the Pirates need first base help. The Blue Jays have four players who can play first base. Josh Bell is the Pirates’ sole first baseman. The Blue Jays should target Trevor Williams for an improved rotation.

A Better Blue Jays Rotation

The Blue Jays rotation has been plagued by injury. Nate Pearson, Matt Shoemaker and Trent Thornton are on the IL. Trevor Williams’ addition to the rotation brings a solid starter. In 24-1/3 innings, Williams has struck out 23 and walked eight. In addition, hitters only barrel up his pitches 1.8 percent of the time. According to Statcast, Williams’ exit velocity is 1.9 miles lower than league average.

Also, a five pitch mix adds versatility to the Blue Jays rotation. Williams is mainly a fastball, slider and change up pitcher. According to Statcast, Williams fastball averages 91.5 mph. His slider averages 82.9 mph with 39.8 inches of drop and 3.8 inches of horizontal movement. Also, his slider gets hitters to whiff 41.0 percent of the time.

Who the Blue Jays would give up

The Blue Jays would most likely give up a first basemen. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is someone the Blue Jays will not part with. With the recent acquisition of Daniel Vogelbach, Rowdy Tellez would be the candidate to go.

Tellez on the year is batting .227-.288-.455 with four home runs. In his career, he has played 81 games at first with a fielding percentage of 99.4 percent. Tellez has shown improvement this past month. In August, Tellez is hitting .250-.313-.523 with on OPS of .835. In addition, Tellez is under contract for another year before he goes to arbitration.

Tellez still has room for improvement. However, given the limited playing time he is getting on the Blue Jays, his growth will have to come on another team.
