The Chicago White Sox kept up their winning ways in convincing fashion this past weekend. Fans probably loved every second of the team taking two of its three-game set against the crosstown rival Cubs. While there are a ton of contributors that deserve credit for the series win, there is one player that stood out above the rest. His name is Jose Abreu, and he really stepped up for Chicago in a massively important series.
In three games, Abreu finished 7-for-12 with six home runs and nine RBI. That delicious stat line was ballooned by his ridiculous Game 2 when he was 4-for-4 with three dingers and four RBI. However, that takes nothing away from the two-time All-Star’s torrid stretch.
This three-game sample would be considered a solid two-week stretch for most MLB sluggers. We’re not entirely sure what clicked for Abreu, but if this is a sign of things to come, White Sox opponents are in for a rude awakening.
The White Sox Are Firing On All Cylinders
Following the series win, during which they tallied 18 total runs, Chicago now ranks second in MLB with a .266 batting average. The club also currently ranks first in total hits (264) and SLG (.481), as well as second in home runs (55) and OPS (.807).
While that’s all well and good, the White Sox are unfortunately in the best division in MLB. No other group in the league has three teams with a winning percentage greater than .586, and that has them sitting third in the AL West, tied with Cleveland and 2.5 games off the pace of Minnesota.
However, Chicago will have a chance to tighten that gap over the next two games, when they will face the Pirates, who own the worst record in the sport at 7-17. After that, the club will have a three-game slate versus Kansas City, who they swept earlier in the season.
Nothing is ever guaranteed in baseball, but the White Sox’ current form suggests that another potentially lengthy winning streak looms.
