When Ryan Jones was picked in 2016, it came as a bit of a surprise. At the time, he was 20 years old and still playing in the USHL. Even though he was older and bigger than most of the players in the league, he still didn’t put up great numbers offensively. He also wasn’t listed on any prominent rankings.
Offense isn’t Ryan Jones’ thing, though, even though he takes a fair amount of shots, none of them usually come to fruition. Instead, Jones is known for his defensive game and grit. He’s been a solid presence for the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s blue line for the last four years, he’s not afraid to throw hits or block shots.
Still, it means there isn’t as much to work with. It’ll be difficult for him to elevate his game to the NHL level, he’s better-suited to be a third pairing/depth role in a lower-level league.
With the Americans, it’s very likely that Jones spends most of the season with the Cincinnati Cyclones. The organization will hope that Jones can take a huge step in his rookie season, and they’ll look to see if he’s worth keeping as a prospect.
