ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong dropped a major announcement recently, saying that the promotion is ready to return to international events.
This means fans can expect some of their favorite athletes can return to the Circle soon. One of the highly anticipated being the Hero of Myanmar – Aung La Nsang.
Leaving the Land of Smiles
For the past few months since ONE Championship made its official return, the promotion relied heavily on Thailand and ONE Super Series.
This has caused athletes like Stamp Fairtex, Rodlek, and Pongsiri PK. to compete multiple times within a few weeks.
This system has been good to some like Wondergirl Fairtex and Denice Zamboanga. But it has been detrimental to athletes like Saemapetch and Stamp Fairtex.
A return to international events will allow the promotion to refocus on what it does best. It will also place a realistic timeline on the most anticipated fights long overdue.
Return of Big Ticket Fights
One of these being Aung La Nsang vs. Renier de Ridder.
This fight was first tentatively booked after the Dutchman edged out Leandro Ataides in their title eliminator at ONE: Warrior’s Code.
But it was put on the back burner after De Ridder allegedly suffered an injury. Though no mention of such an injury was mentioned in many reports at the time.
Nsang was then booked to face the man he took the belt from – Vitaly Bigdash. But that fight was cancelled because of the ongoing pandemic, allowing De Ridder to return to his rightful place as the next challenger.
There’s no word yet on other big matches that were put on hold because of the pandemic.
Demetrious Johnson vs. Adriano Moraes, Denice Zamboanga vs. Angela Lee, Martin Nguyen vs. Thanh Le, and Brandon Vera vs. Arjan Bhullar are among those fights fans are most eager for.
Barring a catastrophic spike in COVID-19 cases, we can all expect these fights to happen soon.
