The Philadelphia Eagles named their captains Wednesday. They’re chosen by head coach Doug Pederson from each of the three facets of an NFL team, offense, defense, and special teams.
Per rules, there has to be a named captain on the field at all times. Eight are named captains to prevent there ever being a time when one is needed and not there. They are the leaders, on and off the field. Wednesday made it official.
From the offense, the Eagles chose quarterback Carson Wentz, center Jason Kelce, and left tackle Jason Peters. Wentz and Kelce are obvious choices, but Peters is kind of a head-scratcher. He wasn’t with the team this offseason until late, and at first, wasn’t even going to be a contributor.
He has been an Eagle since 2009, so it isn’t as if he is a new guy, but to not name tight end Zach Ertz as a captain may have some fans wondering about the status of the vet. Especially since contract talks have failed thus far.
On the defense, the team named defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, defensive end Brandon Graham, and safety Rodney McLeod. No surprises here, except for the name that isn’t on the list. Perennial captain Malcolm Jenkins left the team in free agency this year, heading back to New Orleans.
Cox and Graham are the easy leaders from the front seven. Arguably the best at what they do. McLeod has shown he can be one as well in the secondary, which has changed quite a bit since they last took the field.
Special teams captains are linebacker Duke Riley, and corner Craig James. Neither has been with the team long, but they definitely earned the titles.
The Eagles had a padded practice today in preparation for their Week 1 matchup at Washington. The Eagles win on paper, but it’s key to make sure the final touches of the gameplan are implemented.
Washington is a bit of a wild card in the Division, a lot of unproven youth is on the roster. Making it a bit harder to scheme for.
Armed with their captains, and the game-plan, Philadelphia means to make the trip down the turnpike to Washington a quick win.
