Welcome To The History Books Alec Mills

Alec Mills has become the 16th Chicago Cub to throw a no-hitter. This one coming against the Milwaukee Brewers. Mills is the first Cub to throw a no-hitter since Jake Arrieta in 2016 against the Cincinnati Reds. Prior to today’s game, the last no-hitter by a Cubs player in Chicago was Milt Pappas on September 2, 1972.

The No-Hitter

September 13, 2020, Alec Mills takes the field against a division rival Brewers team. The first inning would be a three up three down inning like many others, including a strikeout to Keston Hiura. The second would start with a strikeout to former Cubs prospect Daniel Vogelbach, followed by a stellar catch from Ian Happ. The second inning would see Milwaukee’s first baserunner with a walk being handed to Ben Gamel. Mills would strike out Eric Sogard for the first out in the third, proceeded by two groundouts from the Brewers.

Christian Yelich would leadoff for the Brewers in the fourth, lining out, followed by a walk to Hiura, and then Vogelbach grounded into a double play to end the inning. The fifth inning would be another three up, three down inning. Come the sixth inning Mills would add his fourth strikeout of the game shutting down Jacob Nottingham. Mills said in his post-game interview, this is when he knew he could make history.

In the seventh inning, the Brewers would see their last baserunner as Vogelbach would reach on a two-out walk. Followed by an infield pop out to end the inning. In the eighth is when things started to come together. Three more up, three more down, and Mills was only three outs away from history. Queue a little bit of drama on the other side, the Brewers sent infielder Orlando Arcia to the mound. Arcia would allow two more hits and runs than Mills did before bringing the game to the bottom of the ninth.

Mills would make quick work of Nottingham, forcing a pop out to Anthony Rizzo in foul territory. Mills strikes out Tyrone Taylor swinging for out number two. One out away from history and Jace Peterson, on a 3-1 count Peterson sent a ground ball up the middle to Javier Baez, who picked it up cleanly to make the play. Alec “Blanking” Mills

Alec Mills was a walk-on at Tennessee-Martin and a 22nd round pick in 2012. He has never played a full MLB season, while never pitching a professional shutout. But he has become the 16th Cub to throw a no-hitter. Welcome to the history books, Alec Mills.
