Maple Leafs forward prospect Mikhail Abramov will be in the lineup for Victoriaville this season. October 2nd will mark the start of the QMJHL regular season.
Mikhail Abramov Quarantined
Abramov arrived in Canada on September 1st and began his 14-day quarantine. With that over, he will be able to join his teammates for pre-season action. This season will be very different as Victoriaville will only play the other Quebec based teams. Due to Provincial restrictions from COVID-19, they will not travel through the maritime provinces.
Victoriaville will play their first game on October 2nd. It will be a home game against the Rimouski Océanic. Theirs will be just one of eight opening night games for the start of the QMJHL season. They will then follow that up with an afternoon road game against the Québec Remparts the very next afternoon.
Abramov is lucky, as most European players are not able to join their teams due to travel restrictions made by the Canadian government. Le Journal de Québec has reported these players are not being considered essential workers, according to the Canadian border restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They will remain in their country until they receive the green light from the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
‘The situation is however different in Victoriaville where the Tigers will dress the Russians Mikhail Abramov and Egor Serdyuk at the kick-off. Abramov was able to enter the country after attending his national team’s summer under-20 camp due to his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Serdyuk has never left the Bois-Francs since the start of the season. pandemic.’ – Roby St.Gelais, le Journal de Québec.
Mikhail Abramov Looks To Improve
Abramov had a very good season with Victoriaville in 2019-20. He recorded 35 goals and 41 assists for 76 points in 63 games. This season he will look to improve those stats as well as round out his overall game. He already has a very high hockey IQ and can read plays well. Another thing you will notice while watching him play is his patience. He is not afraid to skate around in the offensive zone and wait for the right passing opportunity to prevent itself. Due to his pass-first nature, I expect to see his assists numbers go up for sure this season.
Although he is a pass-first playmaker, he does have a surprisingly good shot. I think we will see more shooting from Abramov as he becomes more comfortable with his shooting ability. He showed his ability to fool goalies with his shot and snipe the puck into the top corners. He did score 35 goals last season, so I don’t think 40 would be out of the question for this season.
My Thoughts On Mikhail Abramov
I don’t know what the Maple Leafs have planned for Abramov, but the kid’s future is bright. He can play center or wing, so it will depend on where the Maple Leafs see him fitting in down the road. He has the skill and ability to most likely be a future 3rd liner. Time will tell if he can improve his play enough to become a top-six forward at the NHL level. I will be keeping my eye on him this season.
