ONE CHAMPIONSHIP | A NEW BREED III: Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy vs Magnus Andersson Preview

Let us take an in-depth analysis of how they match-up!

ONE Championship is back in the spotlight as it concludes its ‘A New Breed’ event trilogy series. This card headlines the reigning ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Champion Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy defending his belt against Lion Fight Muay Thai World Champion Magnus Andersson.

This explosive card also features the best strikers in the world. Multiple-time Muay Thai World Champions Yodpanomrung Jitmuangnon, Capitan Petchyindee Academy, Bangpleenoi Petchyindee Academy, and Petchtanong Petchfergus, will be on the undercards displaying their topnotch skills.

Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy eyes to extend his reign with his second World Title defense. However, this is no easy mission to do, as Magnus “Crazy Viking” Andersson is a tough opponent himself. This will be a tactical and nerve-wracking match between two world-class fighters.

Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy

Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy is a legend in the making. From growing up in adverse circumstances to becoming one of the most decorated Muay Thai Fighters in the world, Petchmorakot fought through everything to become the man he is now. Fighting out of the famed Petchyindee Academy, he successfully threads his career into a success.

Combining Muay Thai and Kickboxing, Petchmorakot owns a flawless record of 161-35-2. Along with this, he owns titles in multiple promotions. He was WMC Muay Thai World Champion and a two-division Lumpinee Stadium World Champion.

Petchmorakot has defeated world-renowned fighters like Liam Harrison, Yodsanklai Fairtex, and even the legendary Saenchai. Petchmorakot also briefly held a win over one of the greatest kickboxers, Giorgio Petrosyan. At just 26 years of age, he is slowly cementing himself as one of the best ever.

Magnus “Crazy Viking” Andersson

Magnus Andersson hails from Sweden where he started training Muay Thai just for self-defense. In the process, Magnus found himself falling in love with the sport. After competing at several fights, he decided to move to Thailand and hone his skills better at the famous Revolution Muay Thai Phuket camp.

The ‘Crazy Viking’ holds a professional record of 41-11. Magnus has built himself a decorated career. A Swedish National Champion, MX Muay Xtreme Champion, and his biggest achievement, becoming a Lion Fight World Champion.

For Andersson, he will be making his debut in The Home of Martial Arts directly challenging for a championship. He may be an underdog, but it is a role he embraces. Andersson is in the same spot he was when he beat Lumpinee Stadium Champions. Andersson is confident going into this fight and he knows he can pull the win.

FIGHT BREAKDOWN

Expect this fight to be a chess match. Each fighter will make their opponent pay if they make a mistake. This fight will be a battle of counter-striking. Both of them pack power behind their punches, but whoever lands the cleaner strikes will win.

Keys for Magnus Andersson

Magnus Andersson is a tremendous power puncher. Magnus is also very good with his kicks. In this fight, Magnus will need to constantly move and be unpredictable with his strikes because Petchmorakot is really good at reading. He should tighten his defense, as Petchmorakot enjoys probing with jabs and kicks.

With Andersson being orthodox, he needs to watch out for Petchmorakot’s power left kicks. Another key is anticipating Petchmorakot’s left kicks and countering it with his own power right straight. Timing is very important for Andersson and he will need to lure Petchmorakot with feints to be able to land powerful combinations.

Another key for Andersson is his gas tank. He can open up a fight with a high pace and still keep it up until 5 rounds. He got his nickname “Crazy Viking” with his perseverance to keep fighting. His ability to comeback is second to none. In his career, there are multiple occasions where he is down on the scorecards, or he was knocked down but came back to win.

Andersson will be enjoying a 4-centimeter height advantage in this fight. With a slight advantage in terms of reach, his boxing will be a huge factor in this fight. It is easy to say that this is a low risk–big reward fight for Andersson. He needs to give it everything that he has and seize this big opportunity.

Keys for Petchmorakot

Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy is a mastermind in the “Art of Eight Limbs”. Petchmorakot often starts slow, but he has this high ability to adjust his game. He is able to change the tone of the early rounds and use solutions that will shut and break his opponents down.

Petchmorakot should do what Petchmorakot naturally does. Keep being technical, utilize his range, and throw with high accuracy. For Petchmorakot, volume and power will follow if he begins to find his rhythm and momentum.

With Petchmorakot being a southpaw, he should throw his power kick from the rear leg more often. Investing in this early in the game will give him a huge help in the later rounds. Andersson will be Petchmorakot’s tallest opponent he’s faced in ONE so far. This will be a big adjustment for Petchmorakot as he is used to maintaining distance fighting against shorter opponents.

Clinch work and aggression is key for Petchmorakot in this fight. He is undoubtedly the better fighter inside the clinch. Petchmorakot has a very high fighting IQ. See him using these clinches to faint and then setup elbows and knees on the break. To be able to beat a power puncher, he has to nullify the strengths of his opponent, and that is to not let Andersson find his range.
