2020 has been marked by many things in the baseball world, the most notable being the explosive manner in which Deivi García has burst onto the scene. With only four starts under his belt, the young starter has managed to capture the excitement of Yankee fans everywhere. What’s the key to his success?
This season has undoubtedly been one of the more turbulent seasons for the New York Yankees in recent memory. Having lost five straight games, leading the Orioles by only half a game, and dropping to .500, the team seemed to be in an uncontrollable nosedive. A week later, the Yankees have managed to win six straight and outscore their opponents 48-11 and are showing no sign of stopping. Who’s been at the forefront of this miracle recovery? Deivi Anderson Garcia.
It was Aaron Boone last night who attributed the team’s recent turn of form to dominant outings by the starting rotation. “It’s really started with our starting pitching going out and giving us really strong starts. It’s all started with the starting pitchers.” It’s abundantly clear that J.A Happ’s resurgence, Gerrit Cole’s 7 inning shutout, and finally Deivi Garcia’s back to back seven-inning outings have been instrumental in instituting a momentum shift in the bombers clubhouse.
Albeit a stellar beginning to what’s bound to be a storied career, time and time again experience at the major leave level seems to be a major concern. To those who caution excitement around the young star, I say rain on someone else’s parade. Deivi Garcia is a bonafide stud. Gary Sanchez has labeled him “fearless”, and Yankees ace Gerrit Cole has spoken to his “aggressiveness, the command and the balance and repeatability of his delivery” which you just don’t see in young arms anymore. Garcia’s ability to be assertive on the mound, attack in all counts, on top of being economical is a display of maturity beyond his years.
Deivi’s pitch mix is, for lack of a better word, filthy. Having originally been touted as a solid three-pitch starter with a blistering fastball, curveball and changeup, one key addition to his repertoire has been the slider. The development of his slider has been his saving grace. That pitch, coupled with his unique ability to read batters swings puts him in a league of his own. The aggressiveness in different counts, command, and balance on the mound paired with a slider means lights out for opposing batters and was seemingly the last piece of the puzzle for Garcia
Great pitch variance and selection not only benefits the individual but also gives much-needed rest to the bullpen. A starter that can go 7+ will be key if the Yankees are to make a World Series run this year, and Deivi is a shoo-in for the third spot in that postseason rotation. Supplied with explosive run support like we saw last night, the Yankees mounting 20 runs against the Blue Jays measly 6, he shouldn’t have to worry. With a 3.28 ERA, just a tick above veterans Tanaka and Cole, it’s clear Garcia has established himself as a mainstay in the rotation.
Finally, when it comes to Deivi, the human off the mound, he seems to have made quite the impression. The youngster has received glowing compliments from hitters and pitchers alike, however, what’s struck me most is his mindset. When asked how he’d describe his first four outings, Deivi simply replied “experience”. The Dominican youngster clearly understands the cadence of the game, and how these starts will serve as building blocks of immeasurable importance. The fact that there were no boisterous comments or smirks about his four outings, speaks to a deep understanding of who he is as a pitcher and the true value of these moments.
It’s clear that all these qualities on and off the field have compounded to form a player who’s leading the pack. Although we’ve only had a small glimpse of Deivi’s excellence, if the last two months have been any indication, great things are horizon for this must-watch player.
