Alex Gordon: Forever Royal

Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon, announced Thursday afternoon that he would be retiring from MLB. Gordon had signed a one-year deal to play with the Royals, and now he will do what so few have done in pro sports: end his career with the team where it began. He will play his final game this Sunday against the Detroit Tigers.

Royals fans have seen Gordon grow from a young prospect out Lincoln, Nebraska, to a multiple time gold glove winner. On Thursday, several teammates took to social media to congratulate Alex Gordon on the career he put together.

How It All Began

Alex Gordon was the 2nd overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft out of the University of Nebraska. While in college, he won the Golden Spikes Award and led Nebraska to a College World Series Appearance.

One Shining Moment

Throughout Alex Gordon’s career, he has had some amazing catches in the outfield. From running into the outfield wall, to falling into the first row. Despite this, most Royals fans would say the moment they will remember Alex Gordon for is in Game 1 of the 2015 World Series. The Royals were trailing the New York Mets, and Gordon tied the game with a solo shot to dead centerfield that shook the Kansas City area like a earthquake.

The Last Dance

As the 2020 season comes to a end, Royals fan will be watching the final game closely as Alex Gordon ends his 14-year career this weekend. Teammates and former teammates are honoring Alex Gordon’s signature pine-tar on the back of his uniform this weekend.

Replacing a clubhouse leader and multiple time gold glove winner is not something you can do overnight. Alex Gordon has been mentoring outfielders in the K.C organization for the past several years and many of them look up to him. However, this weekend will not be the last we of Alex Gordon. Royals G.M Dayton Moore said on Thursday that when fans are allowed to attend games again, there will be a “Alex Gordon Day” at the ballpark.
