With the upcoming NHL draft around the corner, it’s time for the Bruins to build their future with all the possible selections available to them. First and foremost the Bruins need to get bigger. The past two seasons the Boston Bruins have gotten pushed around in the postseason. St. Louis Blues had their way last year. This year Tampa Bay Lightning was the more physical team. In this post, we will review possible 2020 Bruins Draft Selections.
Calle Clang/Goaltender Sweden
Calle Clang is the front runner in this year’s class to be an NHL goaltender. His best attributes are his size and experience. He handles the rebounds exceptionally well. He is well poised under pressure.
His current team Rogel, Clang is a workhorse In the 2019/20 season Clang has appeared in 39 games and has posted a 913sv%. Rogel is not noted for its defense so Clang has to carry the team on his back.
With only Gary Swayman and Daniel Vladar in the pipeline, Clang would be a nice depth choice for the Bruins.
Niko Daws
For starters, Niko Daws has a great frame. Standing at 6″4″ and is a robust 205 lbs. Dawes is probably the top goaltender in this year’s class.
In 2020 Dawes appeared in 38 games posting a 23-8 record and a 2.48 GAA. He also appeared in 7 games for Team Canada in 2020. Dawes would be great for the Black and Gold. With only three selections it may be time to select a player of Dawes’s caliber.
Braden Schneider Defenceman Brandon Wheat Kings / WHL – 19/20
An interesting player with plenty of upsides. Brandon Schneider stands 6″2″ and a walloping 209 lbs. Schneider would be a viable replacement if Torey Krug leaves. Which we hope he doesn’t but it is still a possibility.
His main attributes are his passing skills. Also, he is known for not hesitating to jump into a physical altercation. Schneider has the potential to be a top-four defenseman.
The knock-on Schneider is his production consistency. Many scouts feel that Schneider be a stay at home defenseman in the NHL In the 2020 Schneider has played in 60 games with 7 goals and 35 assists for 42 points. Schneiders size would be an attractive commodity for the Bruins.
Kaiden Guhle/Defenseman/Prince Albert Raiders
A gifted two-way defenseman Kaiden Guhle has NHL size. At 6’3″ and 187 lbs Guhle is intimidating to watch. He has good length and puck handling skills. He needs to work on his pivoting skills on defense.
Guhle has put together a solid career in the WHL. In 2019/20 Guhle scored 11 goals and 29 assists for 40 points. His scoring touch will be a welcomed addition on any team.
With a buyout period in effect, Boston could lose John Moore. If that happens the organization could lose two quality defensemen. The problem is the club surrendered a number 1 pick for Ondrej Kase in March.
In Conclusion
With not much cap space available, the Bruins are in a tough situation. General Manager Don Sweeney only has three draft picks this year. Which hopefully is enough to get the Bruins back on top. I look for the team not to sign Tuukka Rask and use the money to sign Jake Debrusk. Jake has been a big contributor and could be a huge part of the future.
I doubt any of these players will be available at pick number 58 in the draft, but let’s hope that someone just as good will be available. In any event, the Bruins have key decisions to make that will shape their future for the next several years.
