Giants Offense Nonexistent in 17-9 Loss to Rams

The Good

After a horrible outing against the 49ers last week, the Giants defense played quite well. The Rams over the first three games had averaged 29.6 points per game, 449.6 yards per game, and 170.3 rushing yards per game. The Rams offense looked like they did in 2018 when they lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

The Giants held them to only 17 points, 240 total yards, and just 58 yards rushing. The defense had stepped up in a huge way. They had shut down what was a prolific offense through its first three games. This game could have very easily been a blowout loss like the week before.

The Giants defense also got two sacks in the game as well as a forced fumble. Both Kyler Fackrell and Austin Johnson were able to sack Rams quarterback Jared Goff. James Bradberry would also recover a fumble caused by Johnson.

The other noticeable standout that deserves plenty of credit was Blake Martinez. Martinez has been a dominant force in every game this season and continued that this week. His final stat line was thirteen total tackles, eight solo and five assisted, and one for negative yards. Martinez has been a tackling machine for the Giants.

For Giants fans looking to find bright spots, in what has been a horrible season so far, look to the defense. The Giants defense ranks 14th overall according to pro-football-reference. The defense has had one major hiccup. Other than that, they have kept Big Blue in every game and, at the least, kept it competitive.

The Ugly

This week there was no bad, just the downright ugly. While the Giants defense impressed, the same can not be said about the offense. The offense looked completely flat yet again and failed to score a touchdown for the second straight week. This offense has not scored a touchdown since the first minute of the fourth quarter versus the Bears.

The offensive line was absolutely lit up this week after allowing five sacks to six different Rams players. While Aaron Donald only got 0.5 sacks, the rest of the team picked up the slack. The worst part is that this was not even the worst part of the Giants’ offensive issues.

Daniel Jones continues his hot streak… of turning the ball over, that is. For the 17th straight game, Jones had at least on turnover. Jones has also only started in 17 games so far. It was also the fifth straight game dating back to last year in which Jones threw at least one interception. If that all was not bad enough, this was the third straight game where Jones threw one interception but did not throw a touchdown.

To say that Daniel Jones has not played well would be downplaying it. He has been outright pitiful. Plenty of Giants fans have done their best to give him the benefit of the doubt. However, at this rate, their patience is either running extremely thin or has altogether run out.

Jason Garrett has massively underperformed as the offensive coordinator for the Giants, to say the least. The offense is now ranked dead last, according to PFR. Despite it being early in the season, Garrett is already on the hot seat in New York.

The Verdict

It is the same sad story that we have seen week in and week out now. The defense does its job relatively well and, at the very least, keeps it competitive. The offense does nothing for nearly the entire game and then attempts to make late-game magic. It is simply not a recipe for winning. At this rate, the Giants will be lucky to win any games. Joe Judge needs to pull the troops together and figure something out before it’s too late.
