The Sixty Points Challenge

The NBA offseason is here! So what better time to take a deep dive in one of the more interesting discussions I have seen on the internet, the sixty points challenge. The challenge is simple, draft an all-time starting five that will limit the opposition to sixty points or less. Along with my line-up, we have some others from writers here at Overtime Heroics that wanted to jump in on the challenge.

My Line-Up

Point Guard: Gary Payton

Sixty Points Challenge

Hard to leave ‘The Glove’ off of a line-up that is focused on defense. He is arguably the best defensive point guard of all time, and the stats back it up. The nine-time all-defensive team member is fourth all-time in steals, and his career defensive win shares of 48.9 are nothing to scoff at.

Lining up against some of the best guards of all-time, Payton was always up for the challenge, and that is what I am looking for in my guards. On top of that, the mind games he will play with his trash talk all but locks in him to my sixty points challenge line-up.

Shooting Guard: Joe Dumars

Sixty Points Challenge

Obviously, the headliner on the ‘Bad Boy’ Pistons teams of the late ’80s was Isiah Thomas. But when you ask Michael Jordan, “Who was the best defensive player you ever played against?” His answer: “Joe Dumars, he was the toughest guy for me to drive by.” Obviously, no one has shut down MJ, but Dumars did the best out of anyone at slowing him down. In fact, he would even outscore Jordan in some of their showdowns.

Dumars is a pretty obvious choice for me. The defensive statistics may not prove to show him as one of the best of all time, but when one of the G.O.A.Ts come out and say that you were one of the toughest guys to play against? That is enough for me, lock him in my sixty points challenge line-up.

Small Forward: Scottie Pippen

Sixty Points Challenge

Arguably, Pippen is the best and most versatile perimeter defender the NBA has ever seen. His eight all-defensive first teams and the fact that he is the only player all-time record at least 2,300 career steals and 900 career blocks.

Pippen has everything you look for in a modern defender, versatility, length, quickness, and strength. The most important thing with Pippen is his switch-ability. He will never get caught in a bad situation after a switch, and that is a key trait on a team that has to limit their opponent to sixty points or less. Pippen was an easy choice at small forward.

Power Forward: Dennis Rodman

Sixty Points Challenge

As much of a problem Rodman could have been off the court, he was on the court for opposing teams. One of the best rebounders of all time, Rodman ensures that the opposition will get a few second opportunities with offensive boards. On top of that, Rodman’s versatility on the court makes him and Pippen’s pairing a nightmare for opposing forwards and big men. There was never a doubt that the two-time defensive player of the year was locked in for this challenge.

Center: Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan is second all-time in defensive win shares. That alone ensured his spot in my line-up. But there is more than just his statistics. Watching Duncan was similar to watching an expert working on his craft. ‘The Big Fundamental’ was never the quickest, but always knew where he needed to be defensive. His 15 all-defensive teams are a record, and in his first nine years with San Antonio, the Spurs ranked first in defensive efficiency in each one of them. Duncan may not be the most athletic defensive anchor, but he is locking up the paint for me in this challenge.
