Cage Warriors Champ-Champ Mason Jones Signs 4-Fight UFC Contract

Cage Warriors champ-champ Mason Jones has officially signed with the UFC. The young Welshman made history recently by becoming Wales’ first two-division Cage Warriors champion after a dominant finish of Adam “The Love Doctor” Proctor. This is the first time any fighter has held two simultaneous Cage Warriors belts since the iconic Irishman Conor McGregor back in 2013.

Wales’ First Double Champ

Mason was headlining the final card of Cage Warriors’ The Trilogy, a three-show MMA spectacle marking the promotion’s return from lockdown-induced hiatus. This unprecedented series of events was a triumphant success for European MMA. The shows were jam-packed with great fights from start to finish, and Mason Jones’ historic victory was the crowning jewel.

It seems the lockdown and general carnage in the world today has done little to slow Mason’s rise to the top. Earlier this year, just before shops were closed and events indefinitely postponed, Mason fought Joe McColgan for the vacant lightweight belt. It was a quick and decisive win, as he finished the Englishman in the first round to secure his first world title.

While his finish over Adam Proctor was also a first-round finish, the path to victory was decidedly harder-fought this time around. Mason almost finished the fight early but, at one point, gave up his back to ‘The Love Doctor’, a known grappler and rear-naked choke specialist. Not the kind of guy you want on your back. For all of 30 seconds, it looked as if Mason’s early success would be for naught. But, fortunately for him, he managed to escape, and minutes later he finished the fight. As the promotion’s first double-champ in seven years, that phone-call from Dana White was all but assured.

Now it’s time for The Dragon to take flight and join the world’s top promotion. With any luck, I hope to see him in the iconic octagon before the end of the year, but either way, I cannot wait for this new chapter in this talented young Welshman’s career.
