Two Cubs Named BBWAA Award Finalists

Two Chicago Cubs have been named BBWAA award finalists, not including the teams seven Gold Glove Nominees. During a less than eventful season filled with many highs and lows, 2020 will wrap up with the MLB awards. Let us dive into the Cubs BBWAA award Finalists.

What Is The BBWAA?

Before we get into the award finalists let’s explain what the BBWAA is. BBWAA stands for the Baseball Writers Association of America. The BBWAA was established in 1908. The Association’s main purpose is to vote on awards and the Hall-of-Fame candidates.

NL Manager of The Year

Cubs’ rookie manager (and former catcher) David Ross, was announced as a finalist for the NL Manager of The Year. The North Siders made a return to the postseason in 2020 after a very disappointing 2019 campaign. With Ross leading the way, the Cubs finished the season record 34-26 and won the NL Central Division crown for the first time since 2017.

Ross has some tough competition in the likes of Miami Marlins’ skipper Don Mattingly and San Diego Padres’ manager Jayce Tingler. Although Ross and the Cubs won the stacked NL Central Division title, he’s not a shoo-in to win NL Manager of The Year.

NL Cy Young

For the first time since 2016, the Cubs have a Cy Young finalist. Yu Darvish seemed to find his stride again, being nominated for the NL Cy Young. Darvish posted an 8-3 record with a 2.01 earned run average in 12 starts this season. From the end of July to the beginning of September, Darvish had himself looking like Cy Young himself. Posting a 0.98 ERA along with his remarkable 7-0 record.

Much like Ross’ pursuit for Manager of The Year, Darvish has some tough competition for the Cy Young award. For Darvish to take home his first Cy Young, he must beat out New York Mets pitcher and back to back Cy Young winner Jacob DeGrom. Along with former Cincinnati Reds pitcher (now a free agent) Trevor Bauer. With both pitchers having a remarkable season, Cubs fans hope Darvish did enough.

Before the season began I wrote an article on “which Cubs could win which awards”. I did in fact have Yu Darvish as a candidate to win the NL Cy Young.

The Other Awards

Unfortunately, no Cubs’ players were announced as finalists for NL MVP or NL Rookie of The Year. Although no players from the Northside had a good enough season to be in the MVP race, many fans had hoped that rookie Nico Hoerner would do enough to be considered for Rookie of The Year. Unfortunately, like most of the Cubs roster, Hoerner disappointed.

Conclusion

The Cubs were bounced in the first round of a disappointing 2020 postseason campaign. Fans are likely still upset with the fact Chicago could not get the job done. Still, the bright spot is that the Cubs have two BBWAA award finalists and seven Gold Glove Nominees to root for. Good luck and congratulations to due to Darvish and Grandpa Rossy in their quest for their respective awards.
