In the 2016 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys were expected to select someone on defense with their fourth-round pick. When the pick was in, it was announced that quarterback Dak Prescott from Mississippi State had been selected. Dak was drafted, at the time, to be Tony Romo’s backup. Then, in the third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, Romo went down with a back injury and was out for the entire 2016 season.
Since becoming the starting quarterback that year, Prescott is 47-21 as a starter, has completed 66 percent of his passes, threw for 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions before going down with a serious injury of his own in 2020.

Now, as the 2020 NFL season is at the midway point for Dallas, many fans are wondering IF Dak will get a New Contract? Right now, the Cowboys are 2-5, third in the NFC East, and on the outside looking in of the overall NFC playoff picture. They also lost their quarterback in week five due to a compound fracture ending his season.
Currently on The Roster
As it stands right now, the Cowboys don’t really have a quality quarterback. On the roster, it is Andy Dalton, Garrett Gilbert, and rookie Ben DiNucci. All three have started at least one game this season and none have won a game. The one quarterback who has come close to a victory was Gilbert, who almost sealed the deal against Pittsburgh, but was intercepted.
What’s next for Dak Prescott?
At the end of the 2019 season, Dak’s rookie contract ended and he needed a new one if he wanted to stay in the Lone Star State. After months of negotiations with his agent, both sides ultimately agreed on the franchise tag. That dilemma also applies to this off-season. Most front-office reporters agree that he will sign another franchise tag. However, local reporters here in Dallas–including Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones–believe that a new contract will be signed by the time the 2021 season rolls around.
What If a Contract Isn’t Signed"?
So, for the sake of argument, let’s say he doesn’t get a new contract and he has to sign with another team. The Cowboys will have to get a new quarterback. That most likely won’t happen in free agency because the market on quarterbacks isn’t that great. That leaves the 2021 NFL Draft. The Cowboys are currently holding the number three overall pick and most likely Trevor Lawrence is taken number one. Their next best option is the quarterback from Ohio State, Justin Fields.
Fields started college in 2018 when he attended Georgia. Fields led the bulldogs to an 11-3 record and a trip to the Sugar Bowl against the Texas Longhorns. Texas won. Before the 2019 season got underway, he went through the "transfer portal," and landed at the Ohio State University.
In 2020, Fields has played and started all three of the Buckeyes games– and all of them were victories against the Big Ten. So far, he has completed 87 percent of his passes, has a total of 908 yards, and threw for 11 touchdowns.
No matter what happens to the face of the franchise, it will be an interesting off-season for Dallas. Whether it is Prescott, Fields, or someone else leading the Cowboys in 2021, this will be the main headline for the team for the foreseeable future. That can all change when Jones decides to make a decent contract offer…stay tuned.
