The Chicago Cubs are in the middle of a strange offseason that could lead to major changes. Already, the Cubs have allowed Kyle Schwarber to hit free agency and Theo Epstein has stepped down. Kris Bryant could be a big name to keep a close eye on in trade discussions and the St. Louis Cardinals could be a landing spot.

In another report, it was noted that the Cubs are also “very open” to trading catcher Willson Contreras. That adds to the list of possible departures from Chicago.

Sports Illustrated broke down the Kris Bryant situation this offseason and they mentioned the Cardinals as one of the top trade destinations for the Cubs’ slugger this offseason.

Here is a brief explanation for why this would be a perfect fit, and also why it would be so unlike the Cubs and Cardinals to work on a trade like this.

But there’s no doubting Kris Bryant would be a near-perfect fit at third alongside Matt Carpenter, and he’d be an even better fit if the offensively starved Cardinals ended up needing a DH. Maybe he’ll end up in St. Louis once he reaches free agency at the same time as Carpenter. But it’s still hard to imagine Bryant in Cardinal red despite the neat on-paper fit.

Why Would Kris Bryant Head to St. Louis?

There is no question that the Cardinals would be a perfect landing spot for Bryant. They need a third baseman and Bryant could use a change of scenery. However, there is one little problem.

Not long ago, Bryant made some rough comments about the city of St. Louis. It seemed clear that he does not enjoy playing there. That could complicate a potential trade to the Cardinals.

Last season with the Cubs, Bryant ended up batting just .206 to go along with four home runs and 11 RBI’s. Those are not the numbers that fans were expecting. With the struggles the Cubs had all year, Bryant could very well be on his way out of town.

If the Cardinals come in with a super aggressive trade offer, there is a chance a deal could be had. Granted, it would be tough for Chicago to move Bryant to their division rivals, but at the right price any trade is possible.

Expect to hear a lot more rumors about Kris Bryant and the Cubs in the coming days and weeks. The Cardinals may not end up getting him, but they are certainly a team to watch. Rumors are going to be coming out fast and furious in the near future with the MLB offseason heating up.
