Get ready, the Packers offseason is less than two months away. The Green Bay Packers have put together an impressive 2020 NFL season thus far. At 9-3 entering Week 14, they are without question a Super Bowl favorite. While they are really good this season, they could be even better next year with a big offseason.
Granted, the Packers offseason is not going to have elite cap room. They also aren’t going to have a very high draft pick. However, general manager Brian Gutekunst has found ways to make some big moves throughout his time leading the team.
Last year, the Packers offseason had a very surprising NFL Draft. They took Utah State quarterback Jordan Love after trading up in the first round, which was strange, considering they made the NFC Championship Game and Aaron Rodgers is still in town. Then, in the second round, they took running back AJ Dillon even though they already had Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams.
In free agency, the team did not have a ton of room to work with. They signed wide receiver Devin Funchess, who chose to opt out of the season due to concerns about COVID-19. Christian Kirksey and Rick Wagner were the other two free agency signings of notice.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Packers offseason, there are quite a few free agents that could fit perfectly for Green Bay. But, there is one in particular that the team should target and may be able to get on a team-friendly deal.
That free agent would be Indianapolis Colts impending free agent wide receiver T.Y. Hilton.
Why T.Y. Hilton Should Be A Target for the Packers Offseason
Hilton has been a star in the NFL for quite a few years. He has been one of the top faces of the Colts’ franchise. Unfortunately, he has fallen off a bit this season and there are real questions about his future in Indianapolis.
Should he end up leaving the Colts, the Packers would be a perfect fit. He is known as a speed wideout and would be a perfect compliment to Davante Adams. Hilton would give Rodgers the kind of deep threat that he has been missing over the last couple of years.
So far this season with the Colts, Hilton has caught 41 passes for 518 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers are not what fans have come to know and love from the speedy wideout. Despite the low numbers, Hilton will be a sought after free agent.
Hilton would not break the bank for the Packers offseason. He isn’t going to come super cheap, but he is 31 years old and has had a down year. If they can get him on a reasonable deal, there is no doubt they should pursue him.
How Would Hilton Look With The Packers?
Fans are going to want to know what they could expect from T.Y. Hilton if he ended up in Green Bay. Well, quite simply, he would resurrect his career. Playing with a quarterback like Rodgers would be exactly what Hilton needs.
Also, playing alongside Adams would make things super easy for Hilton.
Can you imagine a defense trying to focus on taking away Adams? That would leave Hilton free to run wild in the secondary. A quarterback like Rodgers that can get him the ball in stride down the field would make for nightmares on the opposing sideline.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling has been the main deep threat for the Packers over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, his consistency has been a major issue. He has been unable to catch the ball consistently and that has led to some major issues.
Bringing in Hilton to play that role would give Green Bay what they have been missing. He may be aging, but in an offense like the one the Packers have built, he would thrive.
Expect to see plenty of teams come through with interest in signing Hilton. The Packers aren’t going to be alone, but if Hilton wants to have a huge role and compete for a Super Bowl, Green Bay might be the right team to choose.
