Brace yourselves Cubs fans, Chicago remains interested in re-signing Jon Lester.

The Chicago Cubs are going to be one of the most intriguing teams to keep an eye on this MLB offseason. After another disappointing finish to the 2020 season, a lot of moves could be made. So far, the Cubs have seen Theo Epstein leave the franchise and have also non-tendered Kyle Schwarber, making him a free agent.

Most fans would love to hear the news that the Cubs were re-signing Jon Lester, however, there has been a lot of indications that he will not be back. Despite the expectation that Lester would move on, it appears the team is still interested in re-signing him.

Hoyer Still Somewhat Pessimistic About Re-Signing Jon Lester

According to a report from The Athletic, the Cubs are still in contact with Lester and could be open to bringing him back. Jed Hoyer did say that nothing can get done right now, but it could be an option to watch.

“We’ve been very consistent in our communication with his representatives,” Hoyer said. “If things could work out, we’d love to have him back. We have to figure some things out first. That kind of goes without saying, because otherwise, something would be done by now. There are some things we want to work through first. What he’s done for us is amazing. Certainly, we’re not ready to close that door. We have been talking to ACES (Lester’s agents) a lot about that.”

Many fans would love to see Lester end up back with the Cubs. He has been a huge part of the franchise’s success over the past few years. Not only has he been good on the field, but he has also been one of the main leaders in the clubhouse.

Last season with the Cubs, Lester struggled a bit to get things going. He ended the season with a 3-3 record in 12 starts, to go along with a 5.16 ERA. Those are not the numbers that the fans have come to know and expect from Lester.

At 36 years old, Lester is entering the final stage of his career. He may not be a No. 1 starter anymore, but he is a more than capable No. 3 arm in the rotation. For some teams, he could still be an ace.

There are going to be a lot of teams with interest in signing Lester outside of the Cubs. Among those teams could be the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants. Both teams have been rumored to be potential landing spots.

No matter what ends up happening with the Cubs and Lester, he will always be loved by the franchise and fans. The fans will never forget the fact that Lester originally chose the Cubs over other options. Due to that decision, a World Series was ultimately brought to town in 2016.

Expect to hear quite a few more rumors surrounding Jon Lester in the coming days and weeks. There is a good chance that he will end up leaving the Cubs, but there is still some hope that the Chicago Cubs could end up re-signing Jon Lester.
