Top Four Mets GM Candidates

Who will be the next Mets GM? Owner Steve Cohen has a lot of good choices. There are five high profile Mets GM candidates.

Mets GM Candidates : Zach Scott

Zach Scott is currently the assistant general manager for the Boston Red Sox. For Boston, he has overseen the analytics and baseball systems development for the past six years. He also supports the President of Baseball operations on all supporting acquisitions and contracts analysis.

Zach Scott has been with the Red Sox organization for twenty years. He also worked as a director of major league operations. In that role, he assisted the president of baseball operations and the assistant general managers in several aspects of baseball operations. This includes the major league roster, payroll management, player acquisitions, and contract analysis.

Mets GM Candidates : Michael Hill

Michael Hill was with the Miami Marlins organization for 18 years. He came in 2002 and won a World Series in 2003. This season’s 31-29 record was the Marlins’ first winning season since 2009 and they made the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. Michael Hill was the general manager for six seasons before becoming the president of baseball operations.

In 1999, Baseball America named Hill as one of the ten people in baseball who’s prominence will increase significantly in the first decade of the new millennium. Sources said that he would become a successful general manager before 2010. In 1999, he began working for the Colorado Rockies as director of player development till he left to join the Miami front office.

Mets GM Candidates : Jared Porter

Jared Porter is the senior vice-president and assistant general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Porter joined the Diamondbacks after being with the Chicago Cubs for two seasons as the team’s director of professional scouting during the team’s first championship.

Porter had four championships in his first 14 seasons in the major leagues. He had three with the Boston Red Sox in 2004, 2007, and 2013. He was the Red Sox director of professional scouting from 2004 to 2015.

Mets GM Candidates : Billy Owens

Billy Owens is recognized as one of the best talent evaluators of the game as Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel of the Oakland Athletics. Billy Owens spent his 19th season with the Athletics, and his second as assistant general manager and director of player personnel. He was promoted to the position after spending the previous 12 seasons as director of player personnel.

According to Billy Beane, “Billy Owens likes being out there watching players. He might not need that extra time in the office. He is a smart guy and he is the best at things he is good at and the rest can be picked up.”

Mets GM Candidates : Conclusion

Michael Hill’s vast experience as a leader in the front office could give him a leg up for the job. Steve Cohen was asked about the franchise by saying ” I’m not crazy about people learning on my dime.” With that said, Scott, Porter, and Owens are just as experienced and qualified as Hill is. We will have to wait and see.

The most likely scenario is that Steve Cohen will either choose Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Zach Scott or Arizona Diamondbacks assistant general manager Jared Porter.
