At UFC 256, Tony Ferguson fans everywhere lusted for ”El Cucuy” to avenge his loss to Justin Gaethje. Facing red-hot prospect Charles Oliveira, sadly it was not to be. Tony hung tough in the usual fashion, but even a casual fan could tell the fight was not going his way. At the end of round one, ”Do Bronx” had ”El Cucuy” in an armbar, fully hyper-extending his arm. I think everyone was in awe of the pure toughness from Tony, but it wasn’t enough. Charles Oliveira would win via decision, and everybody would be left with a question. What’s next for Tony Ferguson?
While nothing is set in stone, we can still speculate! First, we have to put ourselves in the matchmaker’s shoes and find a fight that ”makes sense”, as UFC President Dana White would say. Here are possibly what’s next for Tony Ferguson!
Tony Ferguson vs Either Diaz brothers
While Nate and Nick will forever be MMA’s most iconic sibling duo, this is a rare occasion where it makes sense for someone to fight either one. Why? Well, Tony Ferguson is now coming off back to back losses. Nate Diaz is coming off a loss to Jorge Masvidal. Not only that, but all three (Nate, Nick, and Tony) possess the easy ability to transition from 155 to 170. I believe 170 should be the weight class Tony fights at moving forward. He’s getting older, we all know the cut to 155 is hellacious and who wants to see someone practically kill themselves for a fight? Especially when the transition to 170 is seemingly so easy.
The fight with Nate or Nick Diaz would be a giant draw as well. Easily it could be the main event for a PPV card or be a worthy co-main fight. On the other hand, let’s talk about Nick. His manager has been sporadically hitting the news with several teasers. Claiming the chances for Nick to make a comeback in 2021 are ”highly likely”. Either way, both fights are a matchup that fans could easily get behind!
Tony Ferguson vs. Dan Hooker
This one would be a banger! Not only is it more realistic as both Hooker and Ferguson are similarly ranked, but both men are coming off big-time losses. Why does it make so much sense though? Well, simply because who else should Tony fight?! The thing is, a fight with Tony Ferguson is something special. The UFC doesn’t just matchup anyone with a guy like ”El Cucuy”. See, nobody else at 155 really has the shine right now to earn that fight. Except for one other man.
Tony Ferguson vs. Rafael Dos Anjos 2
Recently coming off a big win over the always ready Paul Felder, RDA looked reborn at 155. This would be a good matchup for the UFC to make, because while RDA is coming off a win; he was previously 1-4 in his last 5 at Welterweight, preceding that Felder fight. Not only would this fight be another banger, but what better way to see if RDA is really ready to dive back into that top 5?
Well, there you have it, folks! My shortlist of fights that would not only be badass to see but make sense! Just like Dana loves. Now, we just need to get him to check this out…
