Kansas City vs. Miami: Chiefs’ Bad Performances from Week 14

The Kansas City Chiefs beat an excellent Miami Dolphins team in their return to Hard Rock Stadium but had some shaky play from a few key players.

In February of 2020, the Kansas City Chiefs won their second-ever super bowl over the 49ers. That Superbowl took place in Miami at the Dolphins stadium, in which they played this past Sunday.

While the Miami Dolphins are much better than they were last season, they are still not yet on the Chiefs level. With a now 8-4 record, Miami has a chance to make the playoffs after finishing 5-11 just last season. With that, they received the number five pick in the 2020 NFL draft and selected their new franchise quarterback, who has played great in his seven games so far.

Tua Tagovailoa is a budding star but unfortunately could not get the job done even with a few Chiefs’ bad performances. It is safe to say that this game would not be as close if Kansas City played to their full potential. However, the Miami defense did play astoundingly, as they forced Patrick Mahomes to make some errors.

Dolphins head coach Brian Flores may be in contention for the Coach of the Year Award, as he has completely flipped this team around. Even in a loss, this game may have solidified his case for the award.

With that said, there are some question marks on KC’s side that could explain why this game was as close as it was. Let’s dig a little deeper snd dissect the Chiefs’ bad performances from Sunday.

Chiefs‘ Bad Performances

Patrick Mahomes, QB

This may surprise people because he is so great, but Patrick Mahomes did not play particularly well in this matchup. When you look at the stat sheet, you will see that Mahomes had nearly 400 yards and two touchdowns, which is excellent. However, it is also expected of him by now.

Before this game, Patrick Mahomes had two interceptions on the season, both against the Las Vegas Raiders. In this matchup with Miami, Mahomes threw three interceptions. While one was not entirely his fault due to the ball being tipped, the other two were simply under or overthrown.

Aside from the interceptions, Mahomes also had a fumble that was nearly recovered by the defense. Mahomes also took three sacks for a total of 39 yards. When people look at the stat sheet, they may think that the offensive line did not block well for him. While that is true, it is also partially his fault. On three of the sacks, Mahomes had opportunities to throw the ball away instead of losing yards. Instead, he decided to keep it and try to make a big play, which did not work. The Dolphins were all over his scrambling ability, even sacking him for 30 yards on one play that could have been avoided by a throw-away.

While he is a former MVP, he is not perfect, and even he acknowledges that. His quote after the game says it all.

“I have a love/hate relationship with Hard Rock stadium! “

Demarcus Robinson, WR

While Demarcus Robinson only had one target on the day, his bad performance goes much deeper than that. His target did come with a 13-yard reception, which is excellent. However, other than that play, Robinson did not play well.

His part on this list comes from his route running. He did not do the best job of getting open and busting the Dolphins coverages. Tyreek Hill was being guarded by Miami’s best defender, which means that Demarcus Robinson could have taken advantage of the matchup.

While his play was unfortunate, the Chiefs still found a way to win with some bad performances on both sides of the ball. Now it is time for Kansas City to prepare for the New Orleans Saints, who will be a challenging task of their own.
