Dylan Larkin has signed an endorsement deal with BODYARMOR. BODYARMOR has a roster of athletes such as Kyler Murray and Christian McCaffrey of the NFL, as well as Ja Morant and James Harden of the NBA. Larkin is just 24-years-old and sees this endorsement deal as a way to grow his stature off the ice.

“Absolutely, they are world-class athletes and a lot of them, most of them, are at the top of their sport,” Larkin said. “In conversations with BODYARMOR and with my agent, I said I want to be at that level and strive to be one of the best in my sport.”

“It’s very much an honor to be part of that list of athletes.”

One way that Larkin is expected to grow his stature on the ice is by being named captain of the Detroit Red Wings. General manager Steve Yzerman said after the 2020 season that he expected to name a new captain before the start of the 2021 season. The team has not had a captain since Henrik Zetterberg retired in 2017 at 38-years-old. This was due to a degenerative back condition that prevented him from practicing during his last season with the team.

Larkin Led Red Wings in Offense in 2019 With 53 Points

Larkin is a Waterford Township, Michigan native who grew up a Red Wings fan. He is coming off of a season in which the team only won 17 games. This was expected to put the Red Wings in a position to land the presumptive number one pick Alexis Lafreniere, a forward out of Rimouski Océanic, of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Red Wings are one of the seven teams that did not make the Return to Play round last season. This is expected to mean that the team will have a few extra days of training at BELFOR Training Center at Little Caesars Arena. Larkin scored 19 goals in 71 games in the pandemic shortened 2020 NHL season.

Much like Yzerman’s young career as a Red Wing, Larkin’s statistics have not led to team success. Yzerman and the Red Wings did not have success until they brought Scotty Bowman on as head coach in the spring of 1993. Bowman replaced the late head coach and general manager, Bryan Murray. According to Richard Bak, “This Detroit team is going to learn quickly that we’re going to do whatever it takes—maybe building up some confidence, maybe some other type of motivation, Bowman said.” Bowman was brought in to do one thing with the Red Wings, win.

Offseason Additions Will Take Pressure Off of Larkin

Larkin, however, cannot be expected to carry the offensive load of the Red Wings on his own. This is why Yzerman has signed free agent right-wingers Bobby Ryan and Jonathon Merrill to one-year contracts. They have also signed center Kyle Criscuolo and goaltender Kevin Boyle to one-year, two-way contracts. One player that has been signed by the team to a contract of more than one year is right-wing Riley Barber, who signed a two-year, two-way contract.

Paul McPherson previously wrote that these signings put pressure on the Red Wings. Head coach Jeff Blashill is expected to lead his team to more than 17 wins this season. Blashill replaced Mike Babcock in 2015-2016 who left to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yzerman said that Blashill has “done a good job” in his end of the season Zoom meeting in late May. Blashill will no doubt lean on Larkin as one of the young Red Wings to continue to grow his play on the ice during the 2021 season. Larkin will remind his coach that BodyArmor is superior hydration for today’s athletes.

Dylan Larkin and the Red Wings will begin their NHL season on January 13th. Will his position on the ice mirror that of a young Steve Yzerman?
