Yesterday, the Montreal Canadiens signed Michael Frolik to a one-year contract worth $750,000. They finally received the player they have been wanting. This is a very interesting signing because Frolik is the fourth Stanley Cup champion that Marc Bergevin has signed to the Canadiens’ 2020-21 roster.

A Man With a Good Resume

What has Michael Frolik done that is so impressive to grab him? Early in his career, he was consistently going to the playoffs with the Florida Panthers and the Chicago Blackhawks. In the 2012-13 season, Frolik won a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks. He was a constant 40-point scorer while with the Panthers before going to the Blackhawks. Then he went to the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames which continued to have 40-point seasons.

The dilemma is that Michael Frolik dropped off in his point production. He had 14 total points in 57 games with the Calgary Flames and the Buffalo Sabres. Even with the dropoff, there is still value in a player like him.

Why Did the Montreal Canadiens Sign Frolik?

The Canadiens will likely play Frolik in their bottom six. He is nothing but a very nice depth acquisition. He is a solid player that can be a part of the newly acquired taxi squad for teams to have. This means that he can travel with the team and practice with the team without actually playing in the games. This is unless an injury occurs which then he would come into play.
