The DJ LeMahieu rumors are starting to heat up as the Yankees have still not offered him a contract extension to this point of the offseason. Brian Cashman appears to be comfortable allowing other teams to get involved in the LeMahieu market. This brings up the question, is Cashman making LeMahieu an absolute necessity for next season? Or is he only willing to sign him if the price is right?

Teams Involved in the DJ LeMahieu Rumors

The most obvious team involved in the DJ LeMahieu rumors are the New York Yankees. This is where he has spent the last two seasons as an MVP caliber player. Cashman and the Yankees have said that LeMahieu is their number one priority this offseason, which may be true, but by not locking him up early they are leaving the door open for other teams to inquire with the free-agent infielder.

DJ LeMahieu Rumors: New York Mets

According to Jon Heyman, the Mets have already contacted DJ LeMahieu to discuss his availability. Steve Cohen has been active in his first offseason as the owner of the Mets. They have been linked to almost all of the big-name players available including free agents Trevor Bauer and George Springer as well as possible trade target Nolan Arenado. Big roster moves are expected this offseason from the Mets but the specifics are still unclear. If Cohen really wants to make an early splash in the New York market, stealing the Yankees superstar is one way to do it.

DJ LeMahieu Rumors: Toronto Blue Jays

According to multiple reports, the Jays have emerged as a very serious contender to possibly acquire DJ LeMahieu. Toronto has a young and talented team that is ready to make a push from being mediocre to being a contender. Adding LeMahieu to an infield that already has Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette would certainly help their chances.

The Other Teams

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are two other teams that have been connected to some DJ LeMahieu rumors. The Dodgers are a team that in recent years always seem to be a factor whenever a big-name player is available and this time is no different. The Padres are a team on a bit of a spending spree right now who are fully committed to building the best team possible around young superstar Fernando Tatis Jr.and making a push at a World Series. They have already made several big moves recently and could potentially make another if they go after LeMahieu.

DJ LeMahieu: The Player

There is a good reason why DJ LeMahieu rumors are swirling: he is an excellent player. He has been one of the best hitters in baseball the last two years with the Yankees and because of that has been in the running for AL MVP both years. He won the batting title in 2016 with the Colorado Rockies as well as in 2020 with the Yankees, making him the first player in the modern era to win a batting title in both leagues. He is also a utility infielder who can play first, second, and third base. LeMahieu is a valuable asset who is in the prime of his career and would make any team better right now.

Where DJ LeMahieu Will End Up

The DJ LeMahieu rumors are just going to continue to heat up until he signs somewhere. The Yankees still seem to be the front runner in this race because not only does he want to be there, but the Yankees want him there as well. If Brian Cashman is being honest that LeMahieu is the number one priority then it’s hard to believe that he will allow another team to take him away.
