The Philadelphia Phillies may lose All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto this offseason, however, there have been a lot of Willson Contreras trade talks in the last week. The Chicago Cubs could be looking to trade their young catcher. Willson Contreras is a very good catcher and he is one of the best in the game of baseball. Contreras is a viable option for the Phillies in the event J.T. Realmuto decides to take his talents somewhere else.
How Good Is Willson Contreras?
If the Willson Contreras trade talks are true, the Phillies should call. Willson Contreras to the Phillies would make a lot of sense. He is a solid bat and a great defender that would fit in perfectly with this young Phillies roster. His career stats include a career batting average of .265, 74 home runs, 253 RBIs, a .351 on-base percentage, and a slugging percentage of .463. He is also a great defender behind the plate and has the hardware to show for it. He is a two-time All-Star in his young six-year career. He is a key aspect of a Cubs lineup that has remained quite competitive for the past few years.
The Benefit of Having Willson Contreras
There will be several teams that are looking to jump in on the Willson Contreras trade talks. However, the Phillies could be aggressive if they need to fill a hole for the backstop. Willson Contreras is a very good option for teams that would need a catcher, and since the Phillies want to acquire good young talent, Contreras may be the perfect fit for the City of Brotherly Love.
The Phillies could look for a catcher in free agency but since James McCann is already signed by the New York Mets and Realmuto is potentially going to a new team, the catchers that are free agents are not the best. Unless the Phillies went out to aggressively pursue trade talks for someone on the level of Gary Sanchez, Willson Contreras may be the best available option that the Phillies could afford.
The Risk of Getting Willson Contreras
Despite all that Contreras brings, there is some risk of going after him. During the Willson Contreras trade talks, the Cubs would look for a pretty big package deal. Even if they are willing to part with the young catcher, the real question is, are the Phillies willing to give those prospects up for someone like Willson Contreras. I believe the Phillies should absolutely engage in trade talks for Contreras if they lose Realmuto.
If the Phillies want to compete in their division, especially with the Braves already being really good and the Miami Marlins and the New York Mets bolstering their teams, it is important for the Phillies to jump in on these Willson Contreras trade talks, if in fact, the Cubs are looking for a trade.
Another risk for the Phillies trading for someone like Contreras is his contract. His contract expires after this season, so if the Phillies want to go all-in for a young catcher like Willson Contreras, you have to be pretty confident that you can re-sign the young backstop at the end of next year. There is for sure a risk engaging in the Willson Contreras trade talks but time will tell if this potential trade pays off.
If the Phillies want to compete, inquiring about these Willson Contreras trade talks, if they are true. If the Phillies lose Realmuto, I think there is a chance that we could see him in a Phillies uniform soon.
