Luis Castillo has been in a massive amount of MLB trade rumors this offseason. It started last week when the Cincinnati Reds decided to place him on the trade block. Many teams have been calling the Reds to make a deal but nothing materialized. One team, in particular, is the New York Yankees.
MLB Trade Rumors: New York Yankees
General Manager of the New York Yankees Brian Cashman reportedly has been in talks with the Cincinnati Reds about pitcher Luis Castillo.
The New York Yankees are known to have that solid ace but they have been waiting for years to have a solid complimentary pitcher in their rotation. Gerrit Cole is the Yankees’ obvious ace but the best number two rotational pitcher is Luis Castillo.
It would cost the Yankees a boatload of players to even get close to a trade agreement. At least that’s what the Reds organization is saying. For starters, it would cost them pitching prospects Deivi Garcia and Clarke Schmidt. The big part of the deal would be a generational talent centerfielder Jasson Dominguez. Then there might be a few smaller prospects but it is getting too expensive for the Yankees to want to give up.
MLB Trade Rumors: The Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers’ idea behind getting Luis Castillo is his price tag. Castillo is in his first year of arbitration with two more years coming in arbitration. He will be collecting $5.8 million in 2021 and will keep going up.
The Dodgers we’re in the running to get Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer, but his price tag as a free agent will be in the nine-digit range. With Castillo just as good as Bauer, why not take the cheaper asset.
Even though Castillo will be the cheaper route, it will take most of their top prospects to do this. For starters, it would take 2nd/shortstop Gavin Lux, right-handed pitcher Dustin May, catcher Keibert Ruiz, and a few more pieces.
MLB Trade Rumors: The Toronto Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays are interested in these MLB Trade Rumors as well. Plan A is to go after as many free agents as they can get their hands on. They have an extreme amount of money to spend. At the same time, they have the money to take on any of the Reds contracts they don’t want and in turn, the Reds can get younger and cheaper prospects. They have the time and the money to best pull off a trade.
The prospect list for the Blue Jays is very good. First off, Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio would be in play. Their top prospect right-handed pitcher Nate Pearson should be in the mix with this deal too.
MLB Trade Rumors: The New York Mets
The New York Mets have been going after every big-name free agent. They also have been in MLB trade rumors. They want to get a solid pitcher in the rotation between Jacob DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard.
The Mets might be in a bind as they are going after more trades. They do have plenty of infielders on the top 100 prospect list. Ronnie Mauricio is a top 100 prospect and the best shortstop prospect in the league. Brett Baty is their fourth-best prospect at third base. The Reds would want their two best pitching prospects, JT Ginn and Matthew Allan.
MLB Trade Rumors: The Reds want to keep Luis Castillo
The Cincinnati Reds have had many chances to trade Castillo through the years. The main thing the Reds have is control over one of the best fastball starters in the league. The Reds have three years of arbitration before Castillo becomes a free agent in 2023 and they are also trying to trade Sonny Gray. The Reds can easily take on Castillo’s arbitration before keeping Trevor Bauer or Sonny Gray which will cost gravely.
The Reds can build around Castillo and still get some solid pitching for Sonny Gray. The Yankees wanted a crack at getting Sonny Gray back. They can still get decent prospects and pitching for Sonny Gray, however, what the Reds can do is keep both Sonny Gray and Luis Castillo and retain a top ten pitching rotation even with Trevor Bauer gone.
The odds on favorite to win these MLB trade rumors is no one. There is a very good possibility the Reds keep Luis Castillo.
