Some 2021 MLB trade rumors are surrounding Cincinnati Reds star pitcher Luis Castillo and they have been heating up. The New York Yankees may be the most intriguing option among the multiple teams that are interested. Castillo fills a need for the Yankees and they have the pieces to get it done if they want.

2021 MLB Trade Rumors: Luis Castillo

The reason why there are MLB trade rumors around Luis Castillo is that he is probably the most desirable asset on a Cincinnati Reds team that seems to be in a rebuilding process. He is still only 28 years old and has been impressive in three of his last four seasons, including an All-Star selection in 2019. He has a career 3.62 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with some really nasty stuff. He should just now be entering the prime years of his career.

2021 MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees Pitching

The reason why the Yankees are involved in the Luis Castillo MLB trade rumors is because of all the questions surrounding their current starting pitchers. Castillo would fill a need for the Yankees and provide them with some answers in this rotation. Let’s take a look at the current Yankees pitching situation.

The only current Yankees pitcher to fit this description is Gerrit Cole. He is the ace of this staff and one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Yankees Pitching: Free Agents

Three veteran starting pitchers from the Yankees last year are currently free agents. It is unclear whether any of them will be on this pitching staff next year. They are Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton, and J.A. Happ. Tanaka has been a staple with this team for years but his time in New York may be over.

Yankees Pitching: Missing Time

For two very different reasons, Luis Severino and Domingo German are two pitchers that the Yankees are hoping can return to their previous form after a long time away from the team. Severino is recovering from surgery and German completed a suspension.

Yankees Pitching: Young Guns

The Yankees do have some very promising pitching prospects in guys such as Deivi Garcia and Clarke Schmidt but it doesn’t seem as though they are quite ready to be the second or third pitcher in a rotation for a team with World Series aspirations. The belief is that they will one day, just not yet.

Luis Castillo to the Yankees

This is again why the Yankees are currently a focal point in the MLB trade rumors involving Luis Castillo. After Cole, there are mostly just gambles and question marks filling out the Yankees’ pitching rotation at the moment. Castillo would give the Yankees exactly what they are missing if they are willing to pay the price.

2021 MLB Trade Rumors: The Package

Luis Castillo carries a ton of value because of his age and talent so if these MLB trade rumors are going to come true then the Yankees are going to have to pay a big price. The Reds will be looking to receive a package of young talent that would probably include a combination of pitchers and hitters. Pitchers Schmidt and Garcia are definitely candidates as well as young major league hitters such as Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar. The real prize would be the top prospect Jasson Dominguez. If the Yankees are willing to include Dominguez, that would almost definitely convince the Reds to make the deal.

2021 MLB Trade Rumors: Luis Castillo

It seems very likely that the Reds will be parting ways with Luis Castillo at some point because of the value he could bring in return in rebuilding times. There will be other teams involved but the Yankees just might be the current front-runner. They have the firepower to make the Castillo MLB trade rumors a reality if they want to.
