Breakdown of the Oliver Bjorkstrand Contract
As previously mentioned, the new Oliver Bjorkstrand contract is for five years and is worth $27 million. The Blue Jackets announced that it will have an AAV of $5.4 million per season. In the second, third, fourth, and fifth years of the contract, Bjorkstrand will have a no-trade clause. A no-trade clause means that Bjorkstrand will have to submit a list of ten teams that he does not want to be traded to.
What Bjorkstrand Has Brought to Columbus
There is a reason why the Blue Jackets decided to give up a large amount of cap space on Oliver Bjorkstrand. This is because Bjorkstrand, in his five-year NHL career, has been a very effective player. He has spent his entire career with the Blue Jackets. He has played in 246 career games and has scored 65 goals and added 68 assists for 133 total points. He seems to improve every single season.
During the 2015-16 season, Bjorkstrand made his NHL debut and in his rookie season, he was only able to play in 12 games. However, in these games, he scored four goals and four assists. Eight points in 12 games is a remarkable scoring pace, especially for a rookie. He followed up his very promising rookie campaign by having another very good season. In his sophomore season, he played in 26 games and put up 13 points.
His third season was his first full season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Bjorkstrand played in all 82 games and had the best statistical season of his career. He potted 11 goals and also assisted on 29 other goals for 40 total points. He was able to carry over his success from the regular season into the playoffs. He scored one goal and two assists in six playoff games.
In his fourth season in the NHL, Bjorkstrand had yet another successful season as he played in 77 games and had 36 points. His contributions to the Blue Jackets helped get them into the playoffs where they faced off against the heavily favored Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Lightning were clearly the best team in hockey at the conclusion of the 2018-19 regular season. It was a totally different story in the playoffs as the Blue Jackets swept them in four games and handed them a first-round exit. They ultimately met their demise in the second round of the playoffs at the hands of the Boston Bruins. The Blue Jackets played ten playoff games that season and Bjorkstrand played in all of them. He managed to score two goals and three assists in those ten games.
After the disappointing conclusion of the 2018-19 season, Bjorkstrand came into 2019-20 ready to have his best season. COVID-19 cut the season short but he was able to play in 49 games and he matched his point production from the 2018-19 season. He was able to score 21 goals and added 15 assists during the 49 games. The Blue Jackets made the playoffs and Bjorkstrand continued his impressive goal-scoring season. He played in ten playoff games and scored three goals.
The new contract for Oliver Bjorkstrand will be a very smart deal for Columbus. He has the ability to move up and down in the lineup and still be a productive player. After signing the new contract, Dailyfaceoff projects that he will play on the first line alongside Alexandre Texier and Pierre-Luc Dubois. This line should be deadly for opponents to face off against. The new deal is fair for both sides and hopefully, Bjorkstrand enjoys personal success and helps contribute to team success for the Blue Jackets.
