The New York Yankees have completed a blockbuster edition of 2021 MLB trades. Well maybe not exactly but they did acquire Greg Allen in a trade with the San Diego Padres to add depth and defense to their outfield. In return, the Padres received left-handed pitcher James Reeves.
2021 MLB Trades: Yankees Outfield
Greg Allen will add depth to an already solid group of Yankees outfielders including Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Clint Frazier, Mike Tauchman, and Estevan Florial. Though not yet confirmed, with the acquisition of Allen as well as the current depth situation, it appears likely that free agent Brett Gardner will not be brought back for another year with the team.
Greg Allen: The Player
The main thing that Allen brings to the Yankees in this version of the 2021 MLB trades that they have been lacking in recent years is speed. He can steal bases and cover a lot of ground defensively in the outfield. This used to be the strength of Gardner, but it has fallen off as he has aged. Allen doesn"t provide too much value with his bat, but he is a switch hitter which is always a useful tool to have.
Greg Allen: Role with the Yankees
This is by no means a blockbuster of the 2021 MLB trades but it is a trade that will improve the depth of the Yankees outfield and provide them with some speed that they haven"t really had in recent years. Allen will find his home in a role that will include pinch-running duties, defensive substitutions, and the occasional spot starts when the regular players need rest or to recover from injury. Depth is a valuable asset in the grueling 162 -game season.
Brian Cashman and the Yankees have been very quiet this offseason so far. They have been reluctant to do anything but be patient until they know what happens with their top offseason priority. That priority of course is getting a new contract for free agent DJ LeMahieu to return to the Yankees.
While I don"t expect any big-time 2021 MLB trades that include the Yankees until the Leamhieu questions are answered, some additional smaller ones are definitely possible. The Yankees are a team that is always looking for ways to improve so this offseason should follow that trend. Cashman gets the ball rolling by acquiring Greg Allen to add extra depth, speed, and defense.
