The 2021 New York Yankees have officially signed starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin to a new MiLB deal. The veteran right-hander will add some depth to the Yankees pitching staff which currently has a ton of question marks. Though he has struggled over the last few seasons, the Yankees hope he can regain his solid form from a few years back.
2021 New York Yankees Pitching Staff
There are a lot of unknowns surrounding the 2021 New York Yankees pitching staff. The only real certainty at this point is ace Gerrit Cole at the top of the rotation. After that, it is unclear exactly what this rotation will look like this upcoming season.
The Unknown
Masahiro Tanaka and James Paxton are currently free agents while Luis Severino is still recovering from Tommy John Surgery and Domingo German is hopefully returning from his suspension. The rest of the starting pitchers on the roster are either too young or still unproven to be consistent rotational pieces such as Jordan Montgomery, Deivi Garcia, and Michael King.
Potential Moves
The 2021 New York Yankees could continue to sign other depth pieces like Jhoulys Chacin in free agency. There are plenty of guys out there to fill that role but it seems as though this staff needs something more than that. Don"t be surprised if the Yankees make a big trade for someone like Luis Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds to give their starting rotation a much-needed boost.
Jhoulys Chacin: The Player
Let"s take a look at what exactly the 2021 New York Yankees are getting by signing Jhoulys Chacin to a MiLB deal. Not too long ago he was a very solid pitcher and even an opening day starter for the Milwaukee Brewers
Prime Years
The early days of his big league career were impressive. Though not a guy who recorded a ton of strikeouts, Chacin was extremely durable and reliably effective. He pitched to under a 4.00 ERA in five of his first six full seasons and was definitely good enough to be a solid rotational pitcher for just about any team.
Recent Struggles
Jhoulys Chacin just hasn"t been the same guy since that solid six-season stretch. His ERA inflated to over 7.00 at times and his overall effectiveness disappeared. He bounced around to a few different teams before arriving at his new home with the 2021 New York Yankees where he hopes to turn things back around.
2021 New York Yankees Offseason
It has been a very quiet offseason for general manager Brian Cashman and the Yankees. They have openly stated that they do not intend to do much until they know the outcome of the DJ LeMahieu situation. They hope to get a new deal for LeMahieu but that is far from anything certain at this time.
Based on what Cashman has said directly, paired with the fact that they have not made any big splashes yet this offseason, the Yankees fans will just have to be patient while the 2021 New York Yankees figure out what direction they want to go. Just because nothing big has happened yet, doesn"t mean that it won"t happen at some point. On the other hand, don"t be surprised if the Yankees are happy with the core they have and only make smaller depth moves this offseason similar to their recent trade for Greg Allen and this recent MiLB deal for veteran pitcher Jhoulys Chacin.
