2021 NFL Free Agency: 3 Potential Destinations for AJ Green

With the 2021 NFL free agency slowly approaching, the Cincinnati Bengals are already looking ahead in preparation. One of the more intriguing players on the current roster is wide receiver AJ Green. After just ending his ninth season in the league, Green will likely be playing for a new team next year.

The Bengals are in rebuild mode and will be wanting to sign younger players. The WR group is also pretty stacked as it is. Tyler Boyd has turned into a solid player, and Tee Higgins emerged as one of the top rookies this year. Cincinnati’s offense doesn’t necessarily need AJ Green anymore, but he can still be a valuable asset that another franchise can add in 2021 NFL free agency without giving up any draft capital.

Battling through injuries the last few years slowed down Green’s playing abilities. He also hasn’t had 1000 yards in a season since 2017. This year, Green played more of a backup role, putting up 523 receiving yards and two touchdowns, both of which are career lows.

With a deep wide receiver class in the draft this year, things are looking bleak for the former elite WR. However, there are plenty of teams needing help in that position and would love to have a veteran like Green. His experience could be what a young group needs to excel in the future. Here are three potential destinations for AJ Green in the 2021 NFL free agency.

2021 NFL Free Agency: Most Likely AJ Green Destinations

Jacksonville Jaguars

The future is looking bright for the Jacksonville Jaguars heading into 2021 NFL free agency. Not only are they looking for a new coaching staff and general manager, but they have the number one overall pick in the draft. Also, include 10 additional picks and nearly $72 million in cap space, Jacksonville has a chance to get back on track soon.

Currently, the Jaguars offense isn’t too far away from becoming a threat. Undrafted rookie James Robinson was a pleasant surprise this year, and wide receivers DJ Chark and Laviska Shenault have the potential to be a legitimate duo. Adding a seasoned veteran could work wonders for this organization.

AJ Green won’t necessarily be a starter for Jacksonville, but signing him makes sense. His veteran leadership would be second to none, and he still has enough juice left to be a WR3 on this roster. Utilizing Green as an additional coach could go a long way for Chark’s and Shenault’s development. They’re two young WRs who could benefit from his advice and approach. AJ Green should be at the top of the Jaguars 2021 NFL free agency list.

New England Patriots

This was the first losing season the New England Patriots have had since the year 2000. Ending with a 7-9 record puts the Patriots into uncharted territory. During last year’s offseason, it was clear as day the front office needed to address the WR position. Instead, they loaded up on tight ends and defensive players and didn’t give Cam Newton the best supporting cast.

The Patriots will likely be entering 2021 NFL free agency aiming to load up on offense. With Newton hitting free agency, and Jarrett Stidham a huge question mark, the Pats will be shaking things up this year. As for the wide receiver group, Jakobi Meyers wound up being a solid target for Cam Newton. Even so, adding a WR has to be a priority for this franchise in the 2021 NFL Free agency.

The Patriots enter the offseason with a projected $58.5 million in cap space. With that kind of money, they should be able to lock up some solid players. There will be plenty of wide receivers available in free agency. However, with uncertainty surrounding the QB position, New England might not be a top destination in the free-agent market.

With that said, AJ Green would be a fantastic acquisition for the Patriots. He can step in and play a legit role while helping the younger players learn as well. Green isn’t a top player anymore, but he still can be a reliable target for any QB the Patriots start next year.

Arizona Cardinals

With the Arizona Cardinals shockingly missing out on the playoffs this year, they enter the offseason aiming to reload and try again. The franchise has a relatively young roster. In fact, the Cardinals don’t need to make too many roster moves and will be finding their top acquisitions in the draft.

The Cardinals only have a projected $7.7 million in cap space for 2021, which means the free agents they’ll target will be on the cheaper side. Also considering this franchise will likely be searching for help defensively this year, they have a real opportunity to land a veteran receiver like AJ Green.

With Larry Fitzgerald hanging it up for good, the Cardinals will be searching for his replacement in 2021 NFL free agency. DeAndre Hopkins and Christian Kirk will be the starters next year and considering Arizona’s weaknesses lie on defense, drafting a reliable WR this year isn’t realistic.

AJ Green would be a great addition to this roster, as he can fill in for Fitzgerald nicely. This would allow for Hopkins to continue being a superstar WR, while Kirk would have a chance to be a legit WR2 next year. I like Green’s chances of signing to the Cardinals, as he would give them a decent weapon for Murray until they find a younger replacement. It makes sense for Arizona to sign Green in the 2021 NFL free agency.
