There is MLB Breaking News today as it sounds like DJ LeMahieu will sign a new contract with the New York Yankees. After exploring the free-agent market it appears he has come to an agreement to stay with the team according to Jon Morosi.
MLB Breaking News: DJ LeMahieu
LeMahieu was a hot free agent target this offseason who attracted interest from multiple teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays but he will remain with the New York Yankees where he has found much success over the last two seasons. He has not only been their best and most consistent hitter since joining the team, but he is also an excellent fielder at second base with the ability to play first base and third base as well. He has been the ideal lead-off hitter for a team full of sluggers such as Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
LeMahieu Contract Details
According to Jeff Passan, the contract details of the MLB breaking news involving a deal for LeMahieu with the Yankees are now clear. It looks like he will be signing a six-year contract with the team worth 90 million dollars. This is great value for the team while LeMahieu gets the extended years he desired.
2021 New York Yankees Outlook
Another thing that LeMahieu has brought to the Yankees is reliability. He has been one of the few iron men on a team plagued by injuries over the last few seasons. By bringing back LeMahieu it appears that the Yankees are going to stick with what they have in terms of starting position players. The idea of moving Gleyber Torres to second base and signing a shortstop seems extremely unlikely at this point after the MLB breaking news that LeMahieu is returning.
Though the Yankees seem to be satisfied with the current batters on the roster, it is still possible that they add some starting pitching help to a group with a bunch of question marks. They could sign a free agent such as Corey Kluber to help the rotation or even go after Luis Castillo from the Cincinnati Reds who has been rumored to be available via trade.
DJ LeMahieu to Stay With Yankees
This MLB breaking news should make the Yankees organization and their fan base very happy. He has emerged as a fan favorite in his short time with the team as well as a strong leader in the clubhouse and top producer on the field. General Manager Brian Cashman has said numerous times that signing LeMahieu to a new deal would be the number one priority for the Yankees this offseason and it appears as though he is staying true to his word.
Cashman has openly said that no other major roster decisions would be made until there was clarity on the future of LeMahieu, and now that there is, it will be interesting to see if the New York Yankees are involved with any more MLB breaking news as they prepare their roster for the upcoming 2021 MLB season.
