MLB Trade News: Phillies Add Bullpen Strength

Last week in MLB trade news, the Phillies and the San Fransisco Giants made a trade. This is the second trade that the Phillies have made in the last two weeks. This is also the second trade that the teams have made under the newly hired President of Baseball Operations.

MLB Trade News: Phillies Received

In this trade, the Phillies acquired 28-year-old right-hand reliever, Sam Coonrod, from the Giants in exchange.

Coonrad had two seasons as a starter for the Giants. In 2019, Coonrad had six appearances in relief for the Giants and a 3.58 ERA. He allowed 11 runs and three home runs and had 20 strikeouts. In the shortened 2020 season, Coonrad pitched only 14.2 innings had an ERA of 9.82. He lost both decisions that he had during that season but was able to get three saves.

MLB Trade News: Giants Received

The Giants received Carson Ragsdale in this trade. Ragsdale is the Phillies’ fourth-round pick in the 2020 Draft. Ragsdale went to school at the University of South Florida. After being drafted by the Phillies, Ragsdale was sent down to the single-A club of the Phillies the Williamsport Crosscutters. Due to the Pandemic, the minor league teams were not able to play and Ragsdale did not get a chance to make his debut.

Advantages for the Phillies

The Phillies are gaining a lot from this trade. The Phillies have had one of the worst bullpens in the major league. One of the biggest reasons for their struggles last season was because of their struggling bullpen.

Even though his record isn’t the best in the past two seasons, Coonrad is a solid reliever that can efficiently get batters out and close out games.

Another advantage of this trade for the Phillies is that they did not have to give up a lot for Coonrad. They only gave up a fourth-round pitching prospect that would not have been called up to the majors for at least a year.

In addition to this trade, they also signed Archie Bradley to help with their pitching struggles.

Advantages for the Giants

An advantage for the Giants is that they offloaded a reliever and got someone that they can use in the future. Unlike the Phillies pitching situation, the Giants are pretty set for pitching with having their ace in Johnny Cueto and having a pretty stacked bullpen.

With this trade, the Giants did lose a reliever, but they got a pitching prospect that they can hope to rely on soon.

MLB Trade News Final Thoughts

The trade between Phillies and Giants was beneficial for both sides. The Phillies got a reliever that they can use to help their bullpen issues. The Giants gave up a reliever but got a pitching prospect that they can call up and will more than likely have some success in MLB.
