With his first year starting tight end under wraps, Smith will be a sought-after player this offseason. This year, he started the season off to a hot start. However, once Taylor Lewan fell to injury, Smith picked up more blocking duties. For this reason, Smith’s stats fell short, as he ended the year with just 448 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
There’s no doubt Smith is an elite talent, and although he didn’t meet expectations this year, he will have plenty of teams making offers. At the end of the day, four franchises could use his abilities.
NFL Free Agency: Most Likely Jonnu Smith Destinations
First and foremost, the Titans make the most sense for Jonnu Smith to play for. Sure, Tennessee doesn’t have the most cap space, but they’re likely to make a few rosters cuts to create more wiggle room.
The Titans have one of the best offenses in the league, with Derrick Henry leading the way, he’s able to open up the passing game for Ryan Tannehill and AJ Brown. Smith makes an incredible third option for Tannehill, which is why the Titans should bring him back before the 2021 NFL free agency.
Bringing Smith back only makes sense for the Titans. This is the team who drafted him, and for the Titans to be victorious next year, they’re going to want familiarity on that offense. Look for the Titans to make him an offer as soon as possible.
This is one of the more intriguing matchups for Jonnu Smith. The Seattle Seahawks need to regroup and refocus after a disappointing end to their season. Also, this franchise has a questionable lineup in the TE position.
Between Greg Olsen and Will Dissly, the Seahawks don’t necessarily have the most reliable TE group in the NFL. Head coach Pete Carroll claims they’re going to focus more on the run game, making Smith an excellent pick-up in the 2021 NFL free agency.
Smith already has experience playing in a run-heavy offense. Additionally, his catching and playmaking abilities would make an excellent target for Russell Wilson. Not only that, but Smith could be destined for a career year, as DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett garner most of the attention from opposing defenses. This would be an excellent sign for the Seahawks in the 2021 NFL free agency.
The Cincinnati Bengals have a lot to improve on this coming offseason. Hopefully, Joe Burrow is good to go next year, otherwise, this franchise may be chalking up next season as a loss before it even begins.
Even so, the Bengals are not too far away from having a competitive roster. Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins are reliable targets for their young QB. Additionally, Joe Mixon is a fantastic RB in this league. During the 2021 NFL free agency, the front office should be looking to upgrade the TE position, and Smith would fit in nicely for the Bengals.
Drew Sample had a few good games, however, he’s just not consistent. Smith would step in as a reliable third option for Burrow and give the Bengals’ offense a much-needed boost. Look for Cinncinati to make a push for Smith in the 2021 NFL free agency.
Ending the year with the worst record in the NFL, the Jacksonville Jaguars aim to get back on track sooner rather than later. With the most cap space of any team and the number one pick, this franchise is set up for future success.
One of the glaring weaknesses on this roster is the TE position. Tyler Eifert and James O’Shaughnessy are significantly below average, and the Jaguars aren’t in a position to draft the top rookie Kyle Pitts. This means Jacksonville should be searching for a new TE in the 2021 NFL free agency.
Jonnu Smith would be an excellent acquisition for this franchise. He’s a great blocker, a talented receiver, and could give the team some insight on a division rival. Titans fans would be furious if Smith signed with the Jaguars, but this signing would help push this franchise in the right direction for Jacksonville.
