As we get closer and closer to the NBA trade deadline on March 25, trade rumors are starting to heat up. For a Golden State team looking to make a jump to the next level, they may benefit by making some moves while they still can. It was reported by The Athletic on January 26 that the Warriors considering trading Kelly Oubre, Jr. to the Pelicans talks intensify.

Warriors Considering Trading Kelly Oubre

Oubre has underwhelmed this season, and he started out ice cold, shooting only 35% from the field with 21% from deep. He has started to get his legs under him recently though, as he scored 14 against Minnesota on Monday night. Overall, though, it makes sense for the Warriors to shop him, especially to a team that is going to be active in the trade market.

The New Orleans Pelicans are off to a slow start this year, with a 5-10 record currently. They are expected to try to build around their two young superstars, Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson, but their biggest trade bait is probably Lonzo Ball and JJ Redick. The point guard is scheduled to be a restricted free agent at the end of the season, and while he has disappointed so far this season, within the right system, he could flourish.

On the Road Again

While it is not a done deal yet, the Warriors considering trading Kelly Oubre, Jr could definitely happen. If this does happens, it will be his fourth stop since he was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2015. Directly after being drafted, his rights were traded to the Washington Wizards. The Kansas Jayhawks product from New Orleans has seen his way around the league in his career, so he is no stranger to the road.

As a Jayhawk, the 2014 McDonald’s All-American averaged 9 points and 5 rebounds per game in the Big 12, and after his freshman season he declared for the NBA Draft. In his rookie season with the Wizards, it looked as though he would become a solid defensive prospect, with the ability to step out and shoot the three ball.

After a brief stint with the Phoenix Suns, things were looking up for Kelly. He was traded to the Warriors before the beginning of the 2021 season, and they were planning on him being a key part of the team.

Things started off on the wrong foot though, and his shooting was the main crux of his problem. At one point, the Warriors were 19th in the NBA in 3-point percentage. Had Kelly Oubre not taken a single shot, they would have been 4th. In their last ten games, Oubre is averaging 12 points and 5 rebounds per game.

What do the Pelicans have to offer?

Because the Warriors are considering trading Kelly Oubre, who has the potential to be a defensive star, the Pelicans are going to have to put up some of their own talent to entice the Golden State squad.

It is no secret that Zion Williamson is staying put. There are some who might consider him to be the next LeBron James, so to get rid of him would be an enormously poor mistake. They have also stated that they have no intentions of getting rid of Brandon Ingram either, who came over in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.

What they do have is Lonzo Ball. Ball was originally drafted by the Lakers out of UCLA, but with the drama surrounding him, his dad and Big Baller Brand, they traded him, Brandon Ingram and a slew of other assets to the Pelicans in exchange for Anthony Davis.

While he has been underwhelming so far in his time with the Pelicans, perhaps all the young guard needs is someone to mentor him on how to make it work at the next level. Perhaps Stephen Curry can be that in the same vein that Draymond Green is for James Wiseman.

Final thoughts on Warriors Considering trading Kelly Oubre

At the end of the day, this trade could bring nothing to the Warriors. Their main goal is to make it back to the NBA Playoffs this season, and while Oubre might not be helping, a trade like this could bring some energy and help for a backcourt that has been plagued by multiple injuries to Klay Thompson in the last few years.

With Thompson on the floor, they could be a real contender in the Western Conference, but maybe Lonzo Ball or JJ Redick can be a good stopgap for the Warriors until they get him back. What is clear though, is that because the Warriors considering trading Kelly Oubre could happen. They are looking to make moves to bring them back into contention for years to come, but more importantly, contenders right now.
