MLB Breaking News: 2021 Cardinals Land Arenado… Maybe

In the latest MLB breaking news, the St. Louis Cardinals have potentially landed Nolan Arenado in a trade with the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies will receive multiple players for Arenado and the Cardinals will receive Arenado and up to $50 million in cash. The possible reasons why the Rockies are giving the cash as well as Arenado could be because of the prospects that they could receive in the trade. The other possibility is that they may want to reconstruct his contract and possibly give him more money without a trade clause.

MLB Breaking News: Arenado’s Colorado Deal

In the 2020 short season, Arenado struggled at the plate. He hit for .253, with eight home runs, and a .303 OBP. His WAR for the 2020 season was only a 1.6, but he did win his fourth Platinum Glove.

At the beginning of the offseason, reporters asked Bud Black about Arenado and Story being on the team in 2021. He responded by saying,  ”My expectation is that they’ll be with us come Opening Day.”

The Rockies have now lost two out of the three All-Star players that they had in 2019. David Dahl signed a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers worth $2.7 million. Arenado is the second All-Star on that team that is now gone and the only remaining one is Charlie Blackman.

The Rockies and Cardinals trade won’t be official until Monday some reports are saying. The reason is that when Arenado signed his new contract with the Rockies he had a no-trade clause that needs to be addressed. This means that he can opt-out after the 2021 season and go to another team. The deal also needs to be signed off by the MLB/MLBPA.

The Rockies got rid of David Dahl and now probably Nolan Arenado as well. If they are serious about rebuilding this team it will be interesting to see what will happen to other stars such as Trevor Story or German Marquez. On Monday we will hopefully see what exactly this trade entails.
