MLB Breaking News comes thick and fast this time of year and it doesn’t show signs of stopping. The latest installment sees Kolten Wong heading to the Brewers. I previously touched on what I thought the Brewers’ 2021 season would look like, and it seems they have tried to strengthen with one of the most solid defenders in the Majors.
With a heavy emphasis on Christian Yelich to perform, Wong’s bat could also prove to be a valuable asset for the Brew Crew.
MLB Breaking News: Brewers Bag a Steal
As reported by Ken Rosenthal, Wong’s contract is a 2-year, $18m one with a third-year club option. If the Brewers did extend for another year he would pick up another $8m.
With question marks on how the Brewers will perform in 2021, this could be a key factor in them pushing for the NL Central. Wong has consistently progressed to be one of the best 2B in the NL, winning two National League Golden Glove awards in the last pair of seasons.
Although he is one of the best defenders in the league, his bat also allows him to be a threat. Averaging .285 twice in the last four years, he is rarely struck out and also serves as a homerun threat.
MLB Breaking News: Where Does Wong Fit?
Brewers fans have the right to be slightly concerned about another middle infielder being brought in. However, there can be an easy solution to this. Perhaps even two solutions.
Solution One: Move Keston Hiura to 1B. This may benefit all parties as Hiura is due for a bounce-back year, and he isn’t the strongest defender. Moving to first will allow him to regularly play (dependent on Daniel Vogelbach being a DH), and will help him focus on his bat a bit more.
Solution Two: Trade Keston Hiura. Now that a suitable replacement for second base has been found, it may be time for the Brewers to trade Hiura for some prospects or even another pitcher. With the gamble of a bounce-back year, now may be the time to cash in.
MLB Breaking News: Final Thoughts
This is exciting news for all Brewers fans. Kolten Wong has demonstrated fielding ability and batting ability, he will help ease some pressure on Yelich and Lorenzo Cain, whilst being solid in the infield.
