The Houston Rockets recently acquired Victor Oladipo from the Indiana Pacers in the blockbuster trade that involved James Harden. Lately, rumors have surfaced that Houston is looking to move Oladipo again. In this NBA Potential trade, Victor Oladipo would be heading back to Florida.
If something like that were to happen, there are a few scenarios laid out on the table. In this particular one, Victor Oladipo would be returning to the Orlando Magic.
Yes, the place that drafted him second overall and took a chance on the sophomore out of Indiana. It feels weird to discuss trade talks with Victor Oladipo, considering most thought Indiana would be his long term home.
Now, he could be on the move again, and it’s only right to send him back where it all started. With both Oladipo, and the Magic more developed now, the fit would be perfect.
Since leaving the Orlando Magic, Oladipo has had some successful seasons. Of course, when he was traded to the Thunder for Serge Ibaka, the success did not happen right away.
Victor Oladipo averaged 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists his second year in the league. The next year, he finishes the season with similar numbers, but the Magic wanted to go in a different direction.
In Oklahoma City, Oladipo played next to Russell Westbrook as the second option on the team. Of course, that was the amazing MVP season that Westbrook had, his first season averaging a triple-double.
After that, Victor Oladipo was involved in the blockbuster trade that sent Paul George to Oklahoma City from Indiana, where Oladipo would resume his young career. Indiana would be the place that Victor Oladipo would take off and leave everyone from the 2013 draft class behind.
His first year in Indy earned him an all-star appearance and a tough duel with LeBron James and the Cavaliers in the first round. That playoff series would be the first time LeBron James ever went to a game seven in the first round, largely due to the efforts of Oladipo.
We all know what happened the next season. Victor Oladipo would have a season-ending injury amid another all-star year. Since then, things have not really been the same for him. He finished another season with the pacers just last year and was traded to Houston in a four-team trade that brought Caris LeVert to Indiana.
Who Gets What in This NBA Potential Trade
The Orlando Magic have been on cruise control the last few years. They are one of those teams that either barely makes the playoffs or barely misses them.
Usually, that is not good company to be in, especially in the eastern conference, considering it has been a bit weaker than the western conference. This particular trade could give the Orlando Magic a second or first scoring option along side Nikola Vučević.
Orlando Magic Receive: Victor Oladipo
Houston Rockets Receive: Evan Fournier, 2022 Second-Round Pick (Via Pacers), 2023 Second-Round Pick (Via Pacers)
This trade would work well with both teams in terms of skill, talent, and assets. Houston is looking to gain assets back in which they lost when trading for Victor Oladipo.
Trading the Rockets two second-round picks- Magic won’t give up a first for a 21 million dollar rental- gives them more assets. The Oladipo deal is worth 21 million and can be swapped for Fournier’s contract, who is also on a one year deal worth 17 million.
The Rockets get off a contract while shedding four million in cap space and adding assets in the draft. The Orlando Magic add someone who can elevate their offense and their defense in a solid two-way player. Not to mention, if it does not work out, they won’t have to re-sign him and only lose two second-round picks.
