The Vegas Golden Knights this year had announced their first-ever team Captain in Mark Stone. The Golden Knights wanted someone who could lead the team both on and off the ice. Someone who can lead by example, and make the play when needed. Mark Stone was that individual.
Stone was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the sixth round (178th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Stone came to the Golden Knights back on March 8, 2019, from the Ottawa Senators along with prospect Tobias Lindberg in exchange for forward Oscar Lindberg. Vegas had signed Stone to an eight-year contract extension through the 2026-27 season worth an average annual value of $9.5 million.
The General Manager at the time, George McPhee, wanted to continue to bring fresh young talent to an ever-growing team, and Stone was a perfect acquisition. At only 27 years of age, Stone has seen plenty of success.
Mark Stone had notched his 400th career point the other night against the Anaheim Ducks. On an absolutely beautiful feed to Chandler Stephenson, Stone got not only point number 400 on his career, but that would be assist number 248 as well, approaching the milestone of 250 for his career. The assist from Stone was also his 16th point and 12th assist on the year (both team highs so far).
This kind of offensive production is what Stone was brought in for and why he was named Captain. This kind of leadership is what has lead the VGK to their best start in franchise history. To add to the production, Stone was able to get a goal against the San Jose Sharks, making it his 4th of the season.
Mark Stone now has 16 points in 12 games on the 2020-2021 season. The thing that stone has done best since his time on the VGK, is he continues to make everyone around him a better player as well. Stone continues to get shots on net, drive the net hard, get down and dirty to make those plays that are a difference maker for a team. When the majority of your team leading points are assists, it’s safe to say you are a playmaker. The season is almost a quarter of a way done, the Captain Mark Stone and the VGK are just getting started.
