It was mere hours before pitchers and catchers reported to Scottsdale for Spring Training 2021, the San Francisco Giants added some depth to their rotation. It was reported by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that Aaron Sanchez had signed a one-year deal worth four-million dollars with another $2.5 million in incentives.

Latest MLB News: By The Numbers

Drafted in the first round back in 2010 by the Toronto Blue Jays, Aaron Sanchez has spent the last six seasons with two organizations, Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros. Unfortunately, Sanchez did not pitch in 2020.

Sanchez is looking to get back to pitching after injuries limited him in 2019 while with the Astros. After a strong throwing session in front of scouts last week, the Giants liked what they saw out of Sanchez and were able to make him deal. This is a great signing for the Giants as the need for pitching depth is much needed.

Sanchez has the ability to be a top of the rotation starting pitcher if he can remain healthy. Going back to 2016, Sanchez was 15-2 with a 3.00 ERA, 161 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.167 –– pretty impressive for only being in the league for two years.

If Sanchez can make the starting rotation, he would be paired with the two newest additions to the Giants rotation, Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani, along with Kevin Gausman and Tyler Beede waiting in the wings after he comes back from Tommy John surgery.

Latest MLB News: Final Thoughts

With the Giants signing Sanchez means the Giants are committed to getting back in the hunt for a championship. Sanchez may not be the flashiest of signings, but the signing will address the need for depth in the rotation and possibly the bullpen. It just all depends on how the Giants intend to use Sanchez going into Opening Day.
