MLB Breaking News: Mitch Moreland has finally found a home. Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Moreland has agreed to a one-year contract worth $2.5 million to become the next designated hitter/first baseman for the Oakland Athletics.

MLB Breaking News: Moreland A Great Fit

When Moreland was traded to the San Diego Padres last season, everyone knew it would not be a long-term deal. Moreland was able to fill in when he was called upon and did terrific during his short time with the Padres. When he was not offered a contract at the end of last season, determining where he would fit in the best was the big question.

The Athletics came in out of nowhere and were able to sign Moreland to a very team-friendly contract. The Athletics are the fourth team Moreland has played for, and with every stop, he has been able to produce when called upon. Moreland gives the Athletics a reliable bat at the designated hitter position. Nothing against Chad Pinder, who has been productive for the Athletics, but with Moreland’s addition, the Athletics will be getting an upgrade at the position. Moreland is coming off a season where he had a .265 batting average, 10 home runs, and 29 RBIs between the Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres.

Aside from being a DH, Moreland has the ability to play first base when everyday first baseman Matt Olsen needs a day off. This is great if you’re manager Bob Melvin. Both Moreland and Olsen are left-handed hitters, which means Melvin will not have to adjust his lineup too much because a lefthand bat will remain in the lineup.

The Athletics got this signing right. They needed to address an issue in the lineup, and adding Moreland to the mix will give the Athletics a very balanced lineup going into Spring Training and Opening Day.
