Belal Muhammad To Step in and Fight Leon Edwards on March 13th UFC Fight Night

Belal Muhammad is to step in as a replacement for Khamzat Chimaev and face Leon Edwards in a five-round main event on the 13th of March, according to ESPN.

Chimaev was forced to withdraw from the scheduled bout between him and Edwards due to lingering issues from COVID-19. This was the third time a main event between the two had fallen through with COVID-19 related issues.

Belal “Remember The Name” Muhammad (18-3) is coming off a victory last weekend against Dhiego Lima, where the welterweight dominated for three rounds towards a unanimous decision.

On the other side, Leon “Rocky” Edwards (18-3) has not fought since 2019 – a unanimous decision victory over Rafael Dos Anjos. However, he is riding an eight-fight winning streak and has a strong case to be next in line for a title shot with his last loss coming to welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

The five-round main event will be a great opportunity for Belal Muhammad to prove his worth to the welterweight division as he gets a shot against number three ranked Edwards. Muhammad had originally called out number 12 ranked Li Jingliang following his conquering of Lima, who sits one place above him in the welterweight rankings.

While for Leon Edwards, it may be enough for him to prove why he should be next in line for the title having been unable to attract any other title contender to face him. Edwards was originally promised that he would receive a title shot if he beat Chimaev yet there is no certainty as to whether that will remain the same if he now beats Belal Muhammad.

Chimaev is currently in Las Vegas, where he is receiving medical treatment regarding his lingering COVID-19 issues and is expected to be back in action around June.

The main event, which is scheduled for March 13th, is set to take place at the UFC Apex, Las Vegas. It will be the perfect opportunity for Leon Edwards to get some well-needed activity under his belt and for Belal Muhammad to prove he belongs with the best in the division.
