The 2021 Colorado Rockies start their spring training on the 28th of February. With Nolan Arenado getting traded to the Cardinals, there will be a spot open on the infield. Also, in the same trade, the Rockies may have found their 5th rotation guy. A lot of things will be different for the Rockies and it will be interesting to see what they do during their spring training.
2021 Colorado Rockies: Spring Training Starting Five
The one problem that the 2021 Colorado Rockies have had is their starting rotation. In the last few years, they have had four out of their five guys set. They have gone with some experienced guys, some young guns, and even rookies. In 2021 the Rockies may have found their solid fifth arm in the rotation.
Austin Gomber is one of the players that the Rockies have gotten from the trade and someone that can make an impact right away. In 2020 Gomber started for four games and played in 14. In his 14 games, he had a 1.86 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 27 strikeouts, one home run, and a 1-1 record. In his career, Gomber has a 7-3 record, 3.72 ERA, 94 SO, and a 1.41 WHIP.
Now with Gomber, it looks like the starting five will be German Marquez, Jon Gray, Kyle Freeland, Antonio Senzatela, and Austin Gomber. With all the problems with the Rockies pitching, this lineup looks solid. Sadly, Arenado is gone, but this may have given the Rockies the best lineup they had in a while.
Batting Lineup
The next thing to keep an eye on during training camp is how the batting lineup will end up. With the new players in the infield, to the cleanup spot, the batting lineup is going to be completely different in 2021
With Arendado out of the lineup, it looks like Trevor Story will be the next player in the clean-up spot. For the infield, I feel like Ryan McMahon, Elias Diaz, Garrett Hampson, and Brendan Rodgers will bat at the end of the lineup. Raimel Tapia will lead off, with Charlie Blackmon at the two or three spots. Then Story at cleanup. You can put Josh Fuentes, or someone else that shows a good bat at spring training in one of those spots as well. It will be interesting to see what Bud Black does.
Infield
One of the biggest stories for the Rockies after the trade is who is going to be at 3B. The other problem is that they lost their 1B with Daniel Murphy. The players that can play that spot are Josh Fuentes, Ryan McMahon, and Greg Bird. The person that is projected to get the role is Josh Fuentes.
The other players may play the spot to give Fuentes a break. The players that can play 3B are McMahon, Rodgers, Colton Welker, and Elehuris Montero. The 3B job is still up for grabs. I can see McMahon, Rodgers, and Welker playing at the spot. If Montero shows some promise he can also take this spot. It will be interesting how each of the players plays and who will win these two spots.
The Rockies have a lot of offseason changes. Mostly not in the team"s favor but all in all there will be a 2021 Colorado Rockies Season. McMahon says this team can shock people and still win without Arenado. We will see how the spring looks and if this team can do that and make some noise in 2021.
