A flyweight bout between Alex Perez and Matt Schnell is set to go down at UFC 262, which is scheduled for May 15th. The fight was first announced by MMA DNA. The two flyweights will join the three women’s flyweight bouts that have been announced on the card, with no main event yet to be scheduled.

Alex Perez and Matt Schnell Added To UFC 262

Alex Perez (24-6, 6-2 UFC) will look to get back to winning ways after losing out to Deiveson Figueiredo via first-round submission in the flyweight championship at UFC 255.

The 28-year-old was signed up for the first series of Dana White’s Contender Series back in 2017 and he won his bout with an impressive anaconda choke over Kevin Gray. He was awarded a UFC contract and won his first fight at bantamweight, coming in with another anaconda choke over Carls John De Tomas.

Perez was on a three-fight win streak in the UFC, and he stepped up for a challenge to face UFC veteran Joseph Benavidez in his second flyweight bout in the UFC. Perez was knocked out inside the first round.

The American worked his way back up to the title-fight against Figueiredo by beating Mark De La Rosa, Jordan Espinosa, and Jussier Formiga. A victory over Schnell will see him on his way towards another shot at the title.

Matt “Danger” Schnell (15-5, 5-3 UFC) is another fighter who has spent his time between the flyweight and bantamweight division. Schnell was the LFA champion before being signed for the UFC, only to lose to Rob Font and Hector Sandoval in his first two fights.

The 31-year-old ended up on a hot-streak after losing his first two bouts. A four-fight win streak for Schnell included a performance of the night bonus against Jordan Espinosa.

Schnell was working his way up the rankings and a fight against Alexandre Pantoja was scheduled and a victory would’ve put him right up there in the line for a title fight. Unfortunately for Schnell, he was knocked out inside the first round by Pantoja.

Like Perez, Schnell has to work his way back up the rankings, and the American has already fought in 2021, defeating Tyson Nam at UFC Fight Island 8.

With Alex Perez and Matt Schnell being added to UFC 262, it is not clear where the fighters will land on the card, with the UFC yet to announce the full line-up. The bouts scheduled for the event so far are:

  • Women’s Flyweight: Priscilla Cachoeira vs Gina Mazany
  • Women’s Flyweight: Katlyn Chookagian vs Viviane Araujo
  • Flyweight: Alex Perez vs Matt Schnell
  • Women’s Flyweight: Andrea Lee vs Antonina Shevchenko
